Philip R. "Phil" Zimmermann (born February 12, 1954) is the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), the most widely used email encryption software in the world.
Zimmermann is also a fellow at the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society.
In 2001 Zimmermann was inducted into the CRN Industry Hall of Fame.

Zimmermann who was advised in 1993 by an Assistant United States Attorney in the San Jose, California office that he was a target of a grand jury investigation concerning possible violations of the Arms Export Control Act related to PGP.
Zimmermann that he should expect to be subjected to the same search and interrogation upon every re-entry into the United States, at least until the criminal investigation is concluded.
Zimmermann’s future re-entry into the United States, we would expect the Customs Service to strictly limit its contact with him to the conduct of such interviews, declarations and inspections as may be appropriate under 19 CFR Part 148 to determine whether he is subject to payment of any import duties upon his re-entry.

 PGP, Pretty Good Privacy
Zimmermann believed he had a responsibility to put PGP in the hands of anyone that wanted to have private communications with someone else as a basic human right.
Also in 1996, Zimmermann founded the software company PGP, which was then bought by Network Associates in December 1997, where Zimmermann became a Senior Fellow as well as an independent consultant, and which was later bought by McAfee.
MIT and Zimmermann published a book that contained the PGP source code written in the C programming language, and printed in a special font designed to be easily read by computer scanners, which was legal since the US Supreme Court had consistently refused to ban any written expression.

Zimmermann's response is that he did not put the program on the Internet and that he never sold it.
Zimmermann says that Disney was hampered when it was negotiating over EuroDisney in France because the French government read its unencrypted e-mail back to the United States and learned the company's negotiating strategy.
As Zimmermann suggests, that is like saying that all physical mail should have to be on postcards or else the bad guys will seal their secrets in envelopes.

Zimmermann currently is consulting for a number of companies and industry organizations on matters cryptographic, and is also a Fellow at the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society.
In addition to the awards for versions of PGP developed before Zimmermann started a company, subsequent versions of PGP as refined by the company's engineering team continue to be recognized each year with many more industry awards.
