Hesse is also the name of the German writer Hermann Hesse, as well as the German mathematician Otto Hesse.
In the early Middle Ages, Hesse was a part of Thuringia, but in the War of the Thuringian Succession (1247-64) Hesse gained its independence and became an earldom within the Holy Roman Empire.
The state existed until the death of Philipp I of Hesse in 1567.

Situated in western-central Germany, Hesse borders on (from the north-west and clockwise) the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
The state existed until 1567, when Philipp I of Hesse died, as against his earlier intentions, he split it up between his four sons from his first marriage (Philipp was a bigamist) into much smaller states: Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Darmstadt, Hesse-Rheinfels and the also previously existing Hesse-Marburg.
Essentially (except for the parts of Hesse on the western banks of the Rhine, which became a part of Rhineland-Palatinate), this was a restoration of the pre-1567 Hesse.

Hesse or Hessia, in Middle Germany, was Christianized by St. Boniface in the eighth century, and subject to the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Mainz.
Hesse became, next to Saxony, the chief theater of the Reformation in its early history; and its chief patron among the princes, next to Elector John, was Philip, Landgrave of Hesse, surnamed the "Magnanimous" (1504–1567).

H-Net Review: Henry J. Cohn on Philipp of Hesse and the Reformation
Philipp early showed his mettle as a military commander when, at the age of thirteen, he led a posse of armed men to capture his similarly-aged cousin Elizabeth.
Philipp's reponse to that insurrection in the following year is traced with the aid of the sources published over sixty years ago by Otto Merx and others.
Hesse proper escaped serious problems, possibly because the landgrave had been attentive to earlier complaints by his own peasant subjects and kept the clergy of the diocese of Mainz under tight control.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hesse
Hesse was separated from Thuringia, and, after a long struggle with other claimants of the title, Henry established his authority as Landgrave of Hesse.
Philip's imprisonment by Charles V scarcely exercised a perceptible influence on the progress of the Reformation, and in 1551 Sebastian von Heusenstamm, Archbishop of Mainz, was compelled to resign finally all claims to jurisdiction in Hesse.
Hesse therefore took part in the negotiations of several German states, which resulted in the erection of the ecclesiastical province of the Upper Rhine by the papal Bulls "Provida solersque" (1821) and "Ad Dominici gregis custodiam" (1827).

[[Image Link]] Philipp I, Landgraf von Hessen, "the Magnanimous" (13 November 1504 - 31 March 1567), was a leading champion of the Reformation and one of the most important German rulers of the Renaissance.
However, it seems now that this, the translation of der Großmütige, is actually a misinterpretation; while großmütig means indeed magnanimous in modern German, in Renaissance German, it appears to indeed have meant haughty.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Philipp Melancthon
His attempt to bring about a reconciliation between the two brought him, instead of thanks, only mortification and abuse.
From the age of 30 to that of 50, Melancthon was at the height of his career as spokesman and advocate of the Reformation, which, as had formerly been the case in Hesse and Prussia, was introduced under his guidance into Wurtemberg, Brandenburg, and Saxony.
He never absented himself from a convention of theologians or statesmen, but found himself differing from Luther on many points, for as time went on Melancthon emancipated himself more and more from Luther's teaching.
