This is particularly clear after reading something as enjoyable as Philippa Gregory's The Queen's Fool, which treats the period and its turbulent sweep with an almost operatic grandeur.
Gregory recreates this era with tremendous colour, and she makes the court an enticing but danger-fraught place.
That is emphatically not the case here, and Gregory ensures that all her characters have a full and teeming life.

Comment: I looked up Philippa Gregory because she had written the foreword to the re-issued version of Katherine, by Anya Seton.
Given Gregory's comments about historical fiction versus historical romance in the foreword of Katherine and the disdain in which she appears to hold the latter category of fiction, I expected Fallen Skies would be straight historical fiction without any romance conventions.
Gregory does a great job of portraying just how much power husbands had over their wives in the early part of the last century.

ISBN 0743227441, The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Gregory uses modern language and expressions in her writing, so this novel does not drag a modern reader through a field of Thees and Thous, which IS more historically accurate, but frankly I am not interested in reading a novel that I have to translate.
Since there is little historical fact known about Mary Boleyn (it isn't even sure when she was born), Philippa Gregory has chosen a protagonist who is involved with interesting actual events, but can be conveniently moulded to fit the form of fiction.
In this novel Gregory shows the bitter sibling rivalry that is aided by their cruel families in order to raise their status within Henry's court.

Mary, the story's narrator, is the most sympathetic of the siblings, but even she is twisted by the demands of power and status; charming George, an able plotter, finally brings disaster on his own head by falling in love with a male courtier.

As with Philippa Gregory's other books, Wildacre is beautifully written and in this instance some of the monologues of main character Beatrice's thoughts were especially gripping and astute.
I really love Gregory's style of writing, her descriptions are great and her characters vivid but the problem with wideacre is that the main character Beatrice is absolutely hateful.
