Philippe Manoury is the former director of SONVS, the Département d'électroacoustique et d'Informatique Musicales du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, and an associate of IRCAM (L'Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) in Paris.
Born in 1952, Manoury studied composition first with Gérard Condé and Max Deutsch at the École Normale de Musique, and subsequently with Michel Philippot, Ivo Malec and Claude Ballif at the Paris Conservatoire (1974-8).
Manoury came to public attention with the premiere at the 1974 Metz festival of Cryptophonos for piano, the first of his works involving the accumulation of microscopic details to form a globally perceptible whole.

Philippe Manoury, as a resident composer at IRCAM during the 1980s, was among the first composers to work with digital synthesizers.
Philippe Manoury has worked at IRCAM since the early 1980s and, following his interests in interactions between electronics and performers, he worked with Miller Puckette in developing 'Max', a graphical programming language that has come to be the lingua franca for customizing musical control systems.
Manoury's 'Pluton' (1988), one of the pieces in his series called 'Sonus ex Machina', explores interactions between a MIDI piano and electronic system which expands and transforms the piano sounds.

The libretto was written by Manoury, the French writer Michel Deutsch, and stage director Pierre Strosser.

The Manoury Celebration is a collaboration with between the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, UC Berkeley's CNMAT (Center for New Music and Audio Technologies), Mills College Center for Contemporary Music, and the music department at UC San Diego and is underwritten in part by a generous grant from the Clarence E.

Two new works by Philippe Manoury have recently received their premieres, the chamber opera La Frontière (Ictus ensemble), and Noon, for soprano, choir and orchestra, based on poems by Emily Dickinson (Orchestre de Paris, December 2003).
Since 1994 Philippe Manoury has taught numerous composition seminars internationally, and he was a guest composer at Acanthes in 1992 and 1996.
She has performed Philippe Manoury’s Jupiter, and Pierre Boulez’ …explosante-fixe… Amongst her numerous recordings Pierre Boulez’ Sonatine pour flûte et piano with Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Philippe Manoury’s La Partition du ciel et de l’enfer are particularly worthy of mention.

His researches at IRCAM led him to work in the domain of machine-instrument interaction, where the primary goal was the development of systems allowing the simulation and tracking in real time of instrumental behaviours, culminating in the integration of performance phenomena with musical composition and electroacoustics.
After Jupiter and Pluton, Philippe Manoury completed the cycle with two other pieces, produced at IRCAM : La Partition du Ciel et de l'Enfer, for ensemble and computer (1989,) and Neptune, for 3 percussions and computer (1991).
During the 1992-1993 season, he composed the opening of the opera La Nuit du Sortilège (later renamed 60e Parallèle), which won an award from the UNESCO International Composers' Tribune ; Michigan Trio, for clarinet, violin, and piano ; and Pentaphone, commissioned by the Orchestre National d'Ile-de-France.

He obtained a first prize of analysis to the higher national Academy of music of Paris in the class of Claude Ballif, as well as a prize of composition in that of Ivo Malec and Michel Philippot.
Since nineteen years age, Philippe Manoury takes part regularly in the principal festivals and concerts of contemporary music (Royan, La Rochelle, Metz, Donaueschingen, London...), but it is the creation of Cryptophonos by the pianist Claude Helffer in 1974 with the Festival of Metz which makes him known to the public.
