Philippe Troussier a beau avoir été joueur professionnel (de 1976 à 1983, il a joué dans diverses équipes du championnat de France de deuxième division) il est relativement inconnu dans l'hexagone avant de rejoindre le banc de touche de l'Olympique de Marseille fin 2004.
Troussier part ensuite prendre la tête de la sélection du Qatar, où il sera à l'origine d'une polémique médiatique en faisant part de son souhait de constituer en partie sa sélection de joueurs européens naturalisés.
D'octobre 2005 à décembre 2005, Troussier fut le sélectionneur de l'équipe du Maroc, il est démis de ses fonctions pour « divergences de vues » avec la fédération marocaine de football.
