The Spinners - Music Downloads - Online
Wynne quickly emerged as a first-rate soul singer, and the combination of the group's harmonies, Wynne's soaring leads, and Bell's meticulous production made the Spinners the most popular soul group of the '70s.
Wynne left the band to pursue a solo career in 1977; he was replaced by John Edwards.
Though none of Wynne's solo records were big hits, his tours with Parliament-Funkadelic were well-received, as were his solo concerts.

Wynne – a sly, talkative singer who preached, scatted and joked his way through material, turning every song into a dynamic story -- was a perfect contrast to the smooth, understated style of the rest of the group.
Wynne ultimately left the group in 1977 to pursue a solo career, teaming with George Clinton and the Parliament/Funkadelic crew.
If Wynne’s style was that of a sly cat, Edwards was that of a tiger, devouring songs with a huge voice and multi-octave range.

Wynne's superb voice is highlighted, which carries many of the weakly written tunes.
Philippe is excellent throughout, and it's his singing that gets the album a rating this high.
The album is available on CD as an import for anywhere from $20-30, but it probably isn't worth that much except to Wynne fanatics.

April 3 is the 93rd day of the year (94th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar, with 272 days remaining.
Still, that song has everything but the disco's sink in there, with great drumming by Bootsy, an amazing scat solo by new Funkadelic Philippe Wynne, and perhaps Michael Hampton's greatest solo.
Wynne picks up the lyrics again as the world's funkiest 'thrill sergeant', telling us 'I know it's early, but you gotta get down.' It weaves in traditional U.S. army march calls and tunes seamlessly with the funk.

 Robert Christgau: CG: Spinners
Philippe Wynn (oh, the hell with it) walks away with an eight-minute fast one on top of an eight-minute slow one, but it's a disco-flavored showpiece, produced by Thom's brother Tony and featuring ringer singer John Edwards, that gets things going.
In fact, without Philippe's excesses the essential blandness of the whole concept squooshes down on their collective head.
Midway between his departure in 1977 and his death in 1983, I saw Wynne do a P-Funk cameo that remains one of the most electrifying live performances I've ever witnessed.

A One of a Kind Love Affair charts the great career of an outfit with truckloads of both RandB and pop credibility.
Phillippe' Wynne is almost legendary as a singer and this package takes you from the early Motown sides before the 'Soul' man came on board thru the rest of their best years.
This is arguably the late great Wynne's greatest performance as a Spinner, though one could argue his best performance is a couple of songs later in "Love Don't Love Nobody" a semi-big hit for the group.

Although the entire affair clocks in at just over half-an-hour, they pack a great deal into the effort, commencing with the dynamic mid-tempo "Honest I Do." The four-on-the-floor tempo and compact string arrangement are part and parcel of what made their sound so instantly discernible among concurrent copycat combos.
They likewise had Wynne's versatile vocals in their arsenal, which was no doubt a significant component in their second 7" side, the compelling "Love or Leave." Instrumentally, the distinctive distorted guitar and refined brass accompaniment are all courtesy of Bell's singular musical vision, and faultlessly executed by the equally unmistakable MFSB Orchestra.

The Austin Chronicle Music: Review - The Spinners
From 1972-1976, when Philippe Wynne was their lead singer, the Spinners had 14 Top 40 singles, five of which went Top 5.
With John Edwards serving as Wynne's replacement, the Spinners' vocal mix remained lively and infectious, but the original material, like the bombastic "(Love Is) One Step Away" and glossy yet vacuous "Body Language," is second rate.
There were also covers of pop tunes, from the likes of the Four Seasons, the Carpenters, Sam Cooke, and Al Green, which produced a couple of hits, yet today, those end up sounding less than inspired.
