Philippi was the scene of an early, minor battle in the American Civil War, the Battle of Philippi Races.
Philippi's economy was originally based on coal mining and the railroad industry, but both have declined severely since the mid-20th century.
By far the most famous of these are the Philippi mummies, the bodies of two female asylum inmates that were artificially preserved by a doctor interested in mummification techniques.

The subsequent development of Christianity in Philippi is well-attested notably by a letter from Polycarp of Smyrna addressed to the community in Philippi around 160 and by funerary inscriptions.
Seven different churches were constructed in Philippi between the mid-4th century and the end of the 6th, some of which competed in size and decoration with the most beautiful buildings in Thessalonica, or even those of Constantinople.

A few miles away, in front of the Philippi courthouse, a memorial of four white crosses represented each of the miners from the town who died in the disaster.
