Philippolis - Part of the Griqua Nation's History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Philippolis, the oldest town in the Free State, traces its history to a mission station founded in 1823 on a site chosen by the Reverend Dr John Philip, superintendent of the London Missionary Society's (LMS) operations in South Africa.
The Dutch Reformed Church co-operated with the LMS on this project, and in 1825 the Reverend Dr A. Faure of the Graaff-Reinet congregation founded a school at Philippolis for Griqua nomads.
No nails or screws were used. The exhibits of the Transgariep Museum cover four themes: the LMS effort; the history of the Griquas and their leader Adam Kok, whose house has also been preserved; Emily Hobhouse and her spinning and weaving school; and early leaders of the community.
