Philipsburg was named after a prominent mining engineer from the Comstock mining region in Nevada.
The town was growing at such an unbelievable rate that it was reported in an August edition of the Montana Post that Philipsburg was "scarcely thirty days old" but growing at a "rate of one house a day." By December of the same year, Philipsburg had a population of about 1500 people.
The Philipsburg Grade School is in the oldest operating school building in the State of Montana.

By 1873 Philipsburg was again in full swing, but investment capital continued to be a problem due to the banking Panic of 1873 (Wolle 1963; Periman and Decco 1994).
A $150,000 mill was built in 1875 a mile east of Philipsburg which employed the Reese River chloridizing roast and the pan-amagamation process.
The mine was connected to the mill by an 8,900 foot tramway and to Philipsburg by a 7.7 mile extension of the railroad.

At the museum, there are several books for sale which describe in great depth the history of mining in Philipsburg and Montana.
One of the most famous buildings in Granite was a large Miner's Union Hall with a pool parlor and club area on the first floor and an office, a library, a large dance floor, and an auditorium space on the second floor.
All of the bodies were internned in the Philipsburg Cemetery because the ground was so rock infested in Granite that a grave could not be dug.
