Science Fair Projects - Philles Records
Philles Records was formed in 1961 by Phil Spector and Lester Still.
The name of the label is based on the first letters of their first names.
Artists on Philles include The Crystals, Darlene Love, Bob B Soxx, The Ronettes, The Righteous Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner.

The Crystals - Biography - AOL Music
In early 1962, the Crystals recorded a Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil song called "Uptown," using an arrangement that was a tiny bit lighter on the percussion (except for castanets, of which it had many) but pushed the guitar and the strings out in front more than "Oh Yeah, Maybe, Baby" had.
They'd been unhappy from the time when Spector began using their name on behalf of records made by Darlene Love, and every time they were obliged to perform those songs on-stage it grated against them, and in 1963 they were almost constantly touring and performing.
Spector had even closed down Philles Records, and the resulting unavailability of their records except on the radio only raised the value of the old copies that were out there, and made his periodic reissues of the group's work that much more prized by fans.

His trademark during that era was the Wall of Sound, in which he gathered large orchestras of musicians (even for instruments not generally used for ensemble playing such as the electric guitar) playing orchestrated parts for a fuller sound.
Unfortunately, record company wrangles (he was by then running Philles records with Sill) meant it received little air play in the US until its re-release 3 years later.
He had a major comeback when he resurrected the poor-quality recordings of what became The Beatles' last release, Let It Be.

The record companies want to provide that, even though such files compete with royalty producing tangible "copies", and have no direct royalty provision for which the artists can be compensated, and were clearly not in the minds of the parties to the contracts.
Philles (cite), the trial court, (to which this case was transferred by the federal court by stipulation,) dismissed the complaint, essentially ruling for all time (and for all artists) that no payment is ever going to be due, while ignored the actual contractual language, relevent collective bargaining agreements, plaintiffs'** actual claims and plain common sense.
Philles to dismiss Appellants' breach of contract claims, since the appellees in the case at bar were clearly prohibited from competing with Appellants' record sales by using Appellants' sound recordings on the internet.

The Crystals PHILLES 122 "All Grown Up" RED VINYL This record and the other colored 45's are all part of a group of colored vinyl 45's that were pressed at the Savoy pressing plant in Newark, New Jersey.
They were originally pressed by an employee at the plant who liked to make colored records for his own amusement and even apparently traded a few with pals at other plants who would make colored records for him of releases they were contracted to press.
Obviously, Philles and the other labels represented here did not authorize these records to be pressed in colored vinyl; but they certainly didn't care if a few were made for the amusement of the pressing plant employees.

1 No. 114: Ronnie Greenfield, et al. v. Philles Records, Inc., et al.
In this contract dispute between a singing group and their record producer, we must determine whether the artists' transfer of full ownership rights to the master recordings of musical performances carried with it the unconditional right of the producer to redistribute those performances in any technological format.
We are asked on this appeal to determine whether defendants, as the owners of the master recordings of plaintiffs' vocal performances, acquired the contractual right to issue licenses to third parties to use the recordings in connection with television, movies and domestic audio distribution.
Plaintiffs concede that the contract unambiguously gives defendants unconditional ownership rights to the master recordings, but contend that the agreement does not bestow the right to exploit those recordings in new markets or mediums since the document is silent on those topics.

After both Liberty Records and Capitol Records turned down the master of "Be My Boy" by the Paris Sisters, Sill formed a new label, Gregmark Records with Lee Hazlewood and released it.
Despite the trend towards multi-channel recording, Spector was vehemently opposed to stereo releases, claiming that it took control of the record's sound away from the producer in favor of the listener.
Spector considered their recording of "River Deep - Mountain High," to be his best work, but it failed to go any higher than #88 in the United States.

There was a time in the history of sound recording that the producer did not notrmally get a name check on the record label.
For the most part this was driven by the technology of making a record, something that for the most part consisted of nothing more than pointing some mikes at the musicians and letting it rip.
While the record was slow to garner airplay, eventually it reached number 1 in the USA, staying there for 3 weeks.

London Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
London Records is a record label headquartered in the United Kingdom, originally marketing records in the United States, Canada and Latin America from 1947 through the 1980s.
London arose from the split in ownership between the British branch of Decca Records and that same company's USA branch; the "London" label released British Decca records in the USA, since it could not use the "Decca" name there.
The London label was also used by British Decca in the UK market to release American labels (such as Imperial Records, Chess Records, Dot Records, Atlantic Records, Specialty Records and Sun Records) which British Decca licensed.

Lester Sill - Biography - AOL Music
In 1950 Sill met Lieber in the L.A. record shop where the aspiring lyricist worked as a retail clerk and suggested he find a partner who could read and write music, spurring the beginning of Lieber's collaboration with Mike Stoller.
That same year Sill and Federal Records producer/talent scout Ralph Bass formed a PR agency Brisk Enterprises, and following the success of the duo's Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog," he teamed with Lieber and Stoller in late 1953 to create Spark Records as well as their own publishing firm, Quintet Music, Inc.
So in 1955 Spark sold its catalog to Atlantic Records, which in turn named Sill its national sales manager while giving Lieber and Stoller an independent production deal; while the deal prompted the breakup of the Robins, members Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn continued on as the Coasters, with Sill serving as their manager.

This may be because (like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and a host of others) their recordings were made before the era of the long-playing recording, or it may be because (like many of the Motown artists and the artists produced by Phil Spector) their primary form of recording was the single rather than the album.
The two collections that most fully cover her career are Legacy (for her early recordings) and Lady in Autumn (for her later recordings).
But unlike Philles Records, Motown fostered artists who went on to develop solo careers of great import, including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson.

He became acquainted with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, a pair of songwriters and producers who were very successful by 1958 with the Robins/Coasters and written many songs recorded by top rock and roll acts.
He now began recording on the West Coast, where he developed his Wall of Sound in earnest, using session men as guitarists Glen Campbell, Sonny Bono, and Barney Kessel, pianist Leon Russell, and drummer Hal Blaine.
Phil Spector and Philles Records continued to have hits through 1964, the year of the British invasion.

It was a promising beginning, putting the group, Spector, and his new label on the map; although another song cut at about the same time, "Oh, Yeah, Maybe, Baby" (which featured Patricia Wright on lead), pointed the way to the group's future, with its understated yet boldly played string accompaniment.
Radio stations simply wouldn't play it, and the public didn't like the song, period; according to Barbara Alston, the group didn't like it either, and to this day nobody understands exactly what was in Spector's mind when he cajoled them into cutting it.
It wasn't until early 1963 that the group again sang on one of their own records, "Da Doo Ron Ron," and by that time, Spector had accepted La La Brooks in lieu of Alston as lead singer.

I've always been a fan of rock and roll, a collector from about age ten (both records and science fiction) and then a fanzine publisher.
By 1977 there was a solid scene in Los Angeles too, and Bomp recorded bands including The Weirdos, The Germs and The Zeros, as well as Devo (their 2nd 45, "Satisfaction", and a planned live album that never happened).
This label, it was announced, would offer a home to bands working in a purist '60s garage/punk/psych tradition, with low-budget recording and packaging, no advertising or hype-roots music, of a kind not yet very well known, appealing to a chosen few; anyone that didn't already know about it, we didn't want their business!

The Recording Industry Assn. of America (RIAA) had filed a brief, asking the court to affirm the position that record companies have full rights absent contractual language to the contrary.
The group members have not seen royalties from either the sale of sound recordings or for synchronization licenses since the '60s, when Phil and Ronnie Spector divorced.
In the modern era, most record companies have adopted a policy to split income from such uncontemplated revenue, but the court ruled that such a "common industry practice" was outside the scope of the case.

Upon hearing a single Jerry had written and produced with Clydie King entitled “The Thrill is Gone,” Phil Spector hired him as a staff writer and producer for Philles Records.

Among the most famous from the prime of Philles Records are "Da Doo Ron Ron" by The Crystals, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers and Be My Baby" by The Ronettes, the latter tune a personal favorite of Brian Wilson, who aimed to emulate Spector's production expertise in his own work.
