Rhodes was a scholar at heart and collected a considerable library of his own.
Prof Rhodes will be remembered for his understanding of people, for his complete support of every colleague, and for the founding of a modern division of reproductive physiology in a clinical department which now flourishes with a University Professor, and for his straightforward and lucid writing.

 Shannon v. Rhodes
Rhodes operated his motor-boat in a negligent manner, causing Haley Shannon to be thrown over board and seriosly [sic] injured by the boat propeller.
Rhodes answered the complaint June 29, 1999, asserting the defense of assumption of risk, and filed a motion for summary judgment on January 27, 2000.
Rhodes' s motion contended the doctrine of primary assumption of risk barred the Shannons' claims, and, alternatively it attempted to disprove causation and sought summary adjudication on the separate issue of whether Haley' s siblings could prove a claim for emotional distress.

 About Phillip Rhodes | Reviews
The American Academy of Arts and Letters has cited the work of Phillip Rhodes as music (which) radiates an evocative warmth of expression, while also exhibiting a highly disciplined approach to matters of form, continuity and textual setting.
Born and raised in western North Carolina, his work is as strongly influenced by the traditional music of the Appalachian South as by the works of Bartok, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky which were the foundation of his early training.
But unless we count Ives and Copland, Rhodes was one of the first, and his works have an unusually wide range of moods and degrees of complexity.

Rhodes was a pre-eminant sail boat designer for half of the past century, from 1920 to 1970.
Because he designed many boats for ocean racing, especially to Bermuda, his boats had to be fast, but they also had to be strong, seaworthy, and comfortable to survive and keep racing through the gales that frequent the Gulf Stream and other race courses.

Alexander the Great - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 338 BC Alexander assisted his father at the decisive Battle of Chaeronea against the Greek city-states of Athens and Thebes, in which the cavalry wing led by Alexander annihilated the Sacred Band of Thebes, an elite corps regarded as invincible.
After the battle, Phillip led a wild celebration, from which Alexander was notably absent (it is believed he was treating the wounded and burying the dead, both of his own troops and of the enemy).
At Halicarnassus, Alexander successfully waged the first of many sieges, eventually forcing his opponents, the mercenary captain Memnon of Rhodes and the Persian satrap of Caria, Orontobates, to withdraw by sea.

Hellenistic Astrology [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
We see in Xenocrates both the identification of Gods with stars (as we saw in Phillip of Opus) and the notion that Gods are forces of Nature, thereby creating an important theoretical issue for astrology, namely what is the domain of influence of the planetary gods, as the Olympians are identified with the planets.
He also believed that the world soul is formed from Monad and Dyad, and that it served as a boundary between the supralunary and sublunary places.
Geminus of Rhodes, an astronomer of the mid-first century B.C.E., accepts some tenets of astrology, particularly the influence of aspects 'geometrical relations' of planets, while rejecting others, such as the causal influence of emanations from fixed stars.

This is a superb introduction to the music of American composer Phillip Rhodes.
Born into "a family deeply rooted in the traditions of the Appalachian mountains", Rhodes' works are steeped in his musical upbringing, incorporating and often radically transforming many references to the folk music of his indigenous rural locale.
It is the most outstanding piece on an outstanding disc and demands to be heard - to call it transcendent is not an exaggeration.
