Philo of Alexandria [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Philo's philosophy represented contemporary Platonism which was its revised version incorporating Stoic doctrine and terminology via Antiochus of Ascalon (ca 90 B.C.E.) and Eudorus of Alexandria, as well as elements of Aristotelian logic and ethics and Pythagorean ideas.
Philo's ethical doctrine is Stoic in its essence and includes the active effort to achieve virtue, the model of a sage to be followed, and practical advice concerning the achievement of the proper right reason and a proper emotional state of rational emotions (eupatheia).
Philo states in many places that God's essence is one and single, that he does not belong to any class or that there is in God any distinction of genus and species.

It is impossible, however, to ascribe to the earlier Halakah all the interpretations of Philo that are mentioned and refuted in the Talmud and the halakic midrashim; and extreme caution must be observed in determining which of Philo's interpretations that differ from the accepted Halakah are to be assigned to the earlier one.

Philo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philo (20 BCE - 40 CE), known also as Philo of Alexandria and as Philo Judeaus, was a Hellenized Jewish philosopher born in Alexandria, Egypt.
Philo included in his philosophy both Greek philosophy and Judaism, which he sought to fuse and harmonize by means of the art of allegory, which he had learned as much from Jewish exegesis as from the Stoics.
Philo bases his hermeneutics on the assumption of a twofold meaning in the Bible, the literal and the allegorical.

Philo of Larissa (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
The primary sources agree that Philo's views evolved between his election as scholarch in 110/9 BC and the publication of the Roman Books in 88 BC; but the precise stages of his epistemological evolution and the arguments that led Philo to change his mind are not explicitly described in the texts we have.
Philo's motivation for his final shift away from skepticism in the Roman Books can be seen, at least in part, from the criticisms directed at him by his ex-student Antiochus before their publication in 88/7 BC.
Philo eventually abandoned both radical and mitigated skepticism, on this reconstruction of his work, for a form of open-ended critical inquiry that he described as the basis of the Academic tradition.

Philo was the first important thinker to attempt to reconcile biblical religion with Greek philosophy.

Along with the Logos, Philo posited a whole realm of beings or potencies that bridge the gap between the Creator and his creation.

Philo is extremely important from the point of view of early Christianity, since he is a contemporary of Jesus and St Paul, and his allegorical method of interpreting the Bible had a strong impact on many important Christian Church Fathers, especially Origen, who introduced the allegorical method of reading the Bible into Christianity.
Philo interprets the Bible in an allegorical fashion (that is, he seeks for meanings past the literal sense of the letter of the text) to seek deeper spiritual truths about God and the cosmos.
Philo is especially interesting in the way he treats many old testament characters and places in terms of stations on the mystical journey to the ineffable, a method which was taken over brilliantly by Origen and later applied extensively to the Old and New Testaments to read Christ into scripture.

In modern historical research, Philo is studied as a source for Greek philosophy, as a representative of Second Temple Judaism and as a forerunner of early Christian thought.
As for the latter, Philo has especially been studied to throw light on the concept of Logos in the Gospel of John, on Platonisms in the Epistle to the Hebrews, and on exegetical techniques and forms used in the New Testament.
Philo’s writings reflect a variety of movements within Judaism in the time of the beginnings of Christianity, and this observation has thrown light on some of its conflicts and debates, particularly in relation to Judaism and the Hellenistic world.
