We Philolexians are an opportunistic bunch, so when we heard that some other student organization had gotten free toys once from some company by naming that company their official toy company, it was immediately decided that a committee should be formed to name the official "X" of the Philolexian Society every week.

Thirteen members of the Class of 1815 founded the Philomathean Society on October second, 1813, "for the purpose founding a society for the advancement of learning." At the time, these thirteen members, many of whom were under the age of eighteen, made up nearly all of the junior class.
The society turned to the works of Virgil to select their motto, sic itur ad astra, translated as "such is the way to the stars." In these early years, Philo's role was seen as the encouragement of literature and rhetoric.
As the Civil War approached, the two societies addressed the topic "Is it probable that the abolition of slavery will be attended by the dissolution of the union?" The moderator opened this debate with great drama by placing two pistols on the table.

About a week after the first Princeton demonstration, Columbia University's Philolexian Society, a group that weekly debates controversial issues, held a public reading of passages from the book at the center of Columbia's campus.
Philolexian Society member Matthew Segal said Muslim students called University President Michael Sovern on the morning of the reading to ask that it be cancelled.
He added that the society's reading did not contain Chapter 14 of the novel, which he said is considered the most offensive.

PHILOS: The Philolexian Society celebrated its bicentennial in grand style with a fl-tie dinner in Low Library on April 11.
The society helps “students to emerge from the University in ways that are continuous with Columbia’s great tradition of trying to produce students who are intellectual and social explorers, and not mere experts,” he said.

There seems to be some contention over when it was actually written.
I can personally attest to being present around the time of the original writing and presentation, at or near Columbia’s Philolexian Society (Columbia’s oldest student organization, founded in 1802), sometime between 1992 and 1996.
In fact, I made a poster for its theatrical (okay, in the basement of River) performance as part of a series of one-act plays, Onion Days and Starry Nights in the Zero-Sum Republic:

 The Kilmer Collection
Each year, Columbia University's Philolexian Society hosts a bad poetry contest in loving memory of Alfred Joyce Kilmer, author of "Trees." I've entered this contest a number of times, and even won once (see 'Little Buddy' for the full edition of the winning poem).
Alfred Joyce Kilmer loved life, and he would love the spirit in which we are gathered here this evening.
He was someone who, while he may not have been a great poet, was nonetheless always enthusiastic, ever ready with a full snifter of brandy to offer to visiting Philolexians, and not, I repeat not, related to Alfred E. Newman.

Poems can't JUST be bad - they have to be funny, too.
