Philological criticism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Philological and textual criticism: the study of literature as an aid to tracing the origins of words, the evolution of languages, and the establishment of accurate texts of authors' works, rather than reading the literature as a subject of study which had its own, non-linguistic interests.
The philological branch of linguistics originated in Germany during the nineteenth century, and it rose to prominence in Anglo-American colleges established on the German university model (e.g., University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins), which founded university presses so that their doctoral students' dissertations could be published to the rest of the academic world.
In addition to cleaning up authors' canonical works, the philological critics' greatest contribution to the study of English literature was the restoration of Middle English and Old English as readable precursors of Modern English, giving us a more firm grasp of the sound and sense of nearly a thousand years of literature.

Philologica 2 (1995): Piatigorsky. Brief Notes on the Philosophical and Philological(Summary)
In this connection it is amusing to note that the prefix “post-”, in expressions such as “post-structuralism” and “postmodernism”, refers in the first case to the linguistics of the middle of the twentieth century and in the second, to the art of the beginning of the twentieth century.
A philological philosopher absolutizes the sound and banal philological presupposition “text is all there is” into “all there is is text”.
A philological philosopher, however, is always in want of new texts, for, being reflectively under-developed (if he were not, he would never have become a philological philosopher), he sees himself as the newest (and usually the latest) text.

Sri Aurobindo: Secret of the Veda: 5 - The Philological Method of the Veda
No interpretation of the Veda can be sound which does not rest on a sound and secure philological basis; and yet this scripture with its obscure and antique tongue of which it is the sole remaining document offers unique philological difficulties.
These new renderings satisfy one test we may fairly demand; they fit in to every context, clarify the sense and free us from the necessity of attributing quite different significances to the same term in a work of so fixed a form as the Veda.
Secondly, the theory of the psychological interpretation depends very often on the use of a double meaning for important words, -- the key-words of the secret teaching.

Oxford English Dictionary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dictionary had no university connection originally; it was conceived in London as a project of the Philological Society, when Richard Chenevix Trench, Herbert Coleridge, and Frederick Furnivall had become dissatisfied with the available dictionaries of English.
Finally in 1879, after two years of negotiations involving Sweet and Furnivall as well as Murray, the Oxford University Press agreed not only to publish the dictionary, but also to pay Murray (who by this time was also president of the Philological Society) a salary as editor.
The full title had now become A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society, and the 352 pages, covering words from A to Ant, were priced at 12s.
