Alternative medicine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The precise scope of alternative medicine is a matter of some debate and depends to a great extent on the definition of "conventional medicine." Positions on the distinction between the two include those who reject the safety and efficacy of the other, and a number of positions in between.
Criticisms directed at specific branches of alternative medicine range from the fairly minor (conventional treament is believed to be more effective in a particular area) to incompatibility with the known laws of physics (for example, in homeopathy).
Alternative medicine critics agree with its proponents that people should be free to choose whatever method of healthcare they want, but stipulate that people must be informed as to the safety and efficacy of whatever method they choose.

frontline: the alternative fix: clash: the alternative philosophy of medicine | PBS
Their conviction is that allopathic medicine attacks nature, the doctor tries to cure without taking any account of the body's own innate healing ability and often interferes with the natural restorative process, whereas each of their therapies supports and stimulates the efforts that the body is making to restore the person to health.
Alternative practitioners revere Hippocrates for that same reason but also because in Hippocratic medicine there is very heavy emphasis on trusting in nature to restore people to health.
Believers in complementary and alternative medicine do have in common an ideology that celebrates the things that are natural, and things that are traditional, even though poison ivy is natural, and even though purging and bleeding are traditional.

AMA (CSA) Report 12 of the Council on Scientific Affairs (A-97) Full Text
The terms "alternative medicine," "complementary medicine," or "unconventional medicine" refer to diagnostic methods, treatments and therapies that appear not to conform to standard medical practice, or are not generally taught at accredited medical schools.
Much of alternative medicine deals with the relationship between the mind (as distinct from the brain and its biochemistry) and the body, with a chief goal of achieving a sense of psychological or spiritual well-being in persons and a feeling of wholeness even in the face of a disease process or condition.
Given the growing interest in alternative medicine by the public, accurate, even-handed education about alternative medicine is vital for both the public as well as for physicians, who should be familiar with unconventional therapies and be able to advise patients on their use.
