Philosophy of space and time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philosophy of space and time is a branch of philosophy which deals with issues surrounding the ontology, epistemology and character of space and time.
The existence, or otherwise, of time and space is one aspect of the overall ontology that one adopts.

Time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Time is also a matter of significant social importance, having economic value ("time is money") as well as personal value, due to an awareness of the limited time in each day and in our lives.
Leibniz and others thought of time as a fundamental part of an abstract conceptual framework, together with space and number, within which we sequence events, quantify their duration, and compare the motions of objects.
However, some aspects of time use are relatively stable over long periods of time, such as the amount of time spent traveling to work, which despite major changes in transport, has been observed to be about 20-30 minutes one-way for a large number of cities over a long period of time.

Hans Reichenbach [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
One example of the necessity of an unified theory of space and time is the length contraction, an effect predicted by the theory; this effect shows that the length of a moving rod depends on simultaneity.
Space and time are relational concepts and we can study their properties because of the existence of physical objects, eg clocks, that realize relationships between space-time entities.
According to Reichenbach, the causal theory of space and time is the basis for both the theory of relativity and the philosophy of space and time.

The New Theory of Reference Entails Absolute Time and Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
It is argued in this paper that the NTR carries this entailment; the theory of time is the main focus of the paper and it is argued that the NTR entails the absolutist theory that times are event- independent moments.
The converse side of this point is that the assessment of the relational and absolute theories of space and time cannot proceed in independence of the philosophy of language, but must take into account the uses of spatial and temporal expressions in counterfactuals.
Even if the philosophy of space and time is "based strictly on the sciences" and not on "ordinary language", it must take into account, and be consistent with, the uses of temporal and spatial expressions in the counterfactuals that implicitly or explicitly occur in scientific treatises.

When it is now 6, everything whose time is 7 is one hour into the future, meaning that it will be present in an hour's time; and when, an hour later, it is now 7, everything whose time is 6 is one hour into the past, meaning that it was present one hour ago.

 Space
In the first half of the course, theories of space will be investigated, which special emphasis placed on the absolute/relational debate on the existence of space (and time): i.e., is space merely the relations among material bodies, or is it a substance or property over and above the existence of objects?
Thus a philosophy paper is not just a series of opinions spouted by its author, nor a straightforward reporting of events, nor a "book report" or capsule summary of some famous person's views.
Some of the appropriate techniques are: (1) to assess whether the argument uses key terms properly; (2) to see whether the argument rests on one or more premises that are questionable; and (3) to see whether the argument, if accepted, leads to consequences which do not square with known facts or credible theories.

century philosophers had a difficult time seeing the history from this perspective, because they saw the philosophy of space and time as essentially an argument against Newton, that is, as a struggle of modern epistemology against old-fashioned metaphysics.
What this book attempts to show is that the best philosophy of space and time—the part that has been decisive in the evolution of physics—has been a connected series of arguments that began with Newton, arguments about how physics must define its conceptions of space and time in empirical terms.
Rather, it is an account of how concepts of absolute and relative space, time, and motion have come to play the parts that they play in physical theory, and the impact that the construction, refinement, and critical analysis of these concepts has had on the conceptual development of physics.

 Philosophy through Time & Space
Time has been studied by philosophers and scientists for 2,500 years, and it is much better understood today than long ago.

Our aim in this book is to trace the evolution of the concepts of physical space and time in Western thought from the Greeks to the contemporary developments in relativity theory.

Its secondary aim is to serve as an exemplar for systematic research in the philosophy of science that stands clearly outside the purview of the dominant analytical/positivist schools."
