 Introduction
Philotês, as Emile Benveniste has shown, belongs to a vocabulary of moral terms that is "strongly permeated by values which are not personal but relational."
Rather than denoting psychological states, these words refer to the relations that an individual has with members of his group who are bound to one another by reciprocal duties and obligations.
Such relationships readily extend beyond their institutional basis in hospitality or marriage to bonds of friendship, affection, and love, but these emotions are not essential to the bonds of philotês.

The detailed area of this study encompasses the region in northern and central California from Humboldt County to San Luis Obispo County on the coast, and inland to the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.
Two of these Philotes (bernardino and sonorensis) occur to the east and are much more widespread to the south of the above-defined central coastal area.

Beyond the Illusion of Human Rights
At the city-state level, citizenship comes to replace the idea of philotes as the organizing principle of the larger community, but it is also exclusive and does not erase the strong feelings of membership in the philotes circle.
The pedagogy of the oppressed is a gift in which the pedagog gives up power but not due to abnegation of, or embarrassment over, ownership, but as part of a rigorous process in which a great obligation is incurred by the receiver of this power, the obligation of self-liberation, perhaps self-creation.
It is essentialist and connective in the archaic sense of the philotes circle and the gift economy, but existential and contemporary in that it fixes the drama of self squarely on self-reflexive processes whose purpose is renewal and reassertion of connection.

In this particular instance, the target of reproach may have been the Khari-lâos figure himself, whose very name suggests the notion of "mirth for the lâos."[3] Nevertheless, Kharilaos remains the "most philos of hetaîroi," presumably in the company of other philoi hetaîroi.
Even if one of the philoi hetaîroi were to be singled out for attack, the poetry of blame would not have to go far enough to rupture the philotês.
At least, the transmission of Archilochean poetry at Paros suggests that his blame poetry was not against the social outlook of the local state that helped preserve this poetry.

Night may be "either kindly protection or dangerous leading astray" (Otto 1954: 116) and she passes this ambivalence on to her offspring.
In Hesiodís catalogue of the children of Night (Theogony 211-25), we see that the last few children -- Apatê (Deception), Philotês (Intimacy), Geras (Old Age), and Eris (Strife) -- all possess a certain duality.
Geras, described as oulomenon "destructive" in Hesiodís catalogue (Theogony 225), is called liparon "sleek" in Homer (Odyssey 11.136 etc.), while Philotês brings pleasure but is so powerful that she may conquer even the king of the gods (Iliad 14.353).
