Phimeanakas, 910, perhaps originally built by a minister of Yashovarman I and dedicated to Shiva - or perhaps built by Yashovarman himself (not known for sure).
The Phimeanakas lies due north of Phnom Bakheng and was the pyramid-temple for the royal palace compound.
It is situated in the eastern area of the palace with the actual wooden palace itself once located behind the Phimeanakas, to the west.

 Phimeanakas temple
In its primitive form, the Phimeanakas was only half of its present height and was crowned by a high gallery and in this traditional framework he installed a sanctualy in light construction.
Jayavarman V (968-1001) doubtless replaced a first palisade which surrounded Phimeanakas and the palace by a fine wall of present day and its five Gopuras which are so natural in the development of Khmer Art.
Phimeanakas is the Khmer a word forming of two Sanskrit words: Vimeana + Akasa = celestial Palace or Flying Palace or Aerial Palace.

This is the "golden tower" described by the Chinese envoy Tcheou Ta-Kouan that was found "in the private dwellings of the sovereign" - which gives their precise location and explains the large number of remains which appeared during the course of excavation at the foot itself of the pyramid.
Phimeanakas appears as a pyramid with three diminishing laterite tiers forming an overall height of 12 metres.
It seems that some original form of Phimeanakas existed already during the reign of Yasovarman, since an inscription dated 910 engraved on the jamb of the eastern opening of the present sanctuary describes the setting of a statue of Vishnou-Krishna, invoked under the vocable of Trailokyanatha.

APSARA - Angkor Thom - Royal Palace
The present form of Phimeanakas temple is due to Suryavarman I, who waged war against the reigning monarch to seize the throne at Angkor Thom around 1011A.D. The Royal Palace was remodeled and enclosed by a high wall.
The "public" area included the Phimeanakas and two water reservoirs known today as Srah Srei and Srah Bros. The reservoirs were to be remodeled under the reign of Jayavarman VII or his successors.
The famous vow of fidelity required of Suryavarman's civil servants was probably pronounced in the vicinity of the Royal Palace, as the text of the vow is engraved in a number of places here, notably on the doorjambs of the eastern Entrance Gate.
