  Phineas Gage Information
Phineas Gage is probably the most famous patient to have survived severe damage to the brain.
Phineas was knocked over but may not have lost consciousness even though most of the front part of the left side of his brain was destroyed.
During the same period, Phineas is often pictured as exhibiting himself, usually as a freak, in circuses or fairgrounds around the country.

Phineas, on the other hand, grew up in a patriarchy of older brothers, a shaggily-bearded father, and mannish-hued hall carpeting, not to mention an Old English sheepdog that never was neutered (much to the consternation of the neighbor's snarling, yet yielding Doberman bitch).
Fated together in university psych and poli-sci classes, thereafter, both lives began an upward and converging trend toward updated refinement as the ideal collaboration was born: Tesauro's silver tongue made sure Phineas's sentences were well-dressed, and Phineas's penchant for the trenchant ensured Tesauro's shining prose was clear and piquant.
Indeed, with Phineas on "the cream" and Tesauro on "the clear," we were able to finish The Modern Lover with panache and strength, and on top of that, we slyly passed all drug screenings and testing jointly run by Publishers Weekly and Major League Baseball.

 Phineas Gage Memorial, Cavendish, Vermont
A memorial plaque to one of America's oddest celebrities is bolted to a rock in the tiny town of Cavendish, VT. It commemorates Phineas P. Gage, who, in 1848, had a 3.5-foot-long metal rod blown into his skull, through his brain, and out of the top of his head.
He was honored by Cavendish in 1998 -- the 150th anniversary of his accident -- when the plaque on the rock was unveiled, but as yet there is no annual Gage Days festival in Vermont or anywhere else.
The memorial plaques are bolted to a big rock in an empty lot at the corner of Hwy 131 and S. Pleasant St. Cavendish only has a couple of streets, so it's hard to miss.

ADL Backgrounder - The Order and Phineas Priesthood
The "Phineas Priesthood" is a violent credo of vengeance that has gained some popularity among white supremacists and other extremists in recent years.
Unlike other extremists groups, the Phineas Priesthood is not a membership organization in the traditional sense: there are no meetings, rallies or newsletters.
Rather, extremists become "members" when they commit "Phineas acts:" any violent activity against "non-whites." In this way, achieving Phineas Priesthood status has become the goal of extremists committed to perpetrating violent crimes.
