Phinehas or Pinhas - פִּינְחָס, Standard Hebrew Pinəḥas, Tiberian Hebrew Pînəħās is a name shared by two characters in the Hebrew Bible.
Phinehas son of Eleazar appears again in the book of Joshua.
The beginning of this parshah tells the judgement of Phinehas son of Eleazar; the end of the previous parshah tells of his zealous act.

This one act stopped a plague of Yahweh that at that point had killed 24 thousand Israelites.  It seems illogical, but we can commend Phinehas for doing what he had because we know it stopped the plague.
This is a good lesson for us today.  Lets examine the passage to see why Phinehas was simply being obedient.
So again, how did Phinehas know what to do?  Let’s look further.  First we see Yahweh telling Moses that He is angry for what the Israelites are doing and He instructs Moses to hang the leaders in the open (v4).  Moses next instructs the judges to kill the men joined to Baal-peor.

I know he served in the Revolutionary War in 1777 and wonder if he was a Minuteman serving in 1775.
Phinehas was the son of Jonathan Bean and the grandson of Jeremiah Bean, all of Candia/Brentwood, NH.
In 1804 or so Phinehas and many of his family members, along with a great number of others from Candia, migrated to Montville, Maine.
