Toscana virus RNA in Sergentomyia minuta flies.(LETTERS)(Letter to the editor) - HighBeam Encyclopedia
To the Editor: Toscana virus (TOSV) (family Bunyaviridae, genus Phlebovirus) is an arthropodborne virus transmitted by sandflies.
Reports of infections in travelers, clinical research, and epidemiologic studies have shown that TOSV affects the central nervous system and is a major cause of meningitis and encephalitis in Mediterranean countries in which the virus circulates (1).

The RVF virus belongs to the family bunyaviridae genus phlebovirus.
The RVF virus is a RNA lipid-enveloped spherical structure, 80 nm to 120 nm in diameter and contain 5-nm to 10-nm surface spikes (G1 and G2).
The virion spikes mediate the attachment of the virus to the host cell receptors, serve as hemagglutinin and are the targets for the host’s neutralising antibodies.

Adult golden hamsters inoculated subcutaneously with either of two sandfly fever group viruses, Punta Toro and Gabek Forest (Phlebovirus, Bunyaviridae), developed a fulminating fatal illness characterized by hepatic and splenic necrosis and interstitial pneumonitis.
Necropsy and histopathologic examination of the infected animals revealed pathologic changes involving multiple organs that resembled those described in Rift Valley fever.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a peracute or acute zoonotic disease of domestic ruminants in Africa.
The virus has a three-segmented, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genome and consists of the three segments: L (large), M (medium) and S (small), each of which is contained in a separate nucleocapsid within the virion.
It usually presents in epizootic form over large areas of a country following heavy rains and flooding, and is characterised by high rates of abortion and neonatal mortality, primarily in sheep, goats and cattle.

Rift Valley Fever virus is a member of the Phlebovirus genera of the Bunyaviridae family.
Members of the Phlebovirus genus (Rift Valley Fever and Sandfly Fever viruses) are so named because they can be transmitted by mosquitoes or phlebotomine flies.
RVF virus was placed in this family because it has a tripartite genome and is antigenically similar to other phleboviruses.
