Phoenix adds to the basic formula by including large multi-part enemies (the 'Phoenixes' themselves), a "shield" button (that takes seven seconds to "regenerate" after use) and a large mothership level.
Despite its hardware issues, Phoenix's many gameplay innovations ensured that it now is rightly regarded as a classic and, along with Taito's "Space Invaders" and Namco's "Pac-Man" shares the dubious honour of being one of the most cloned games of the 1980s; with numerous console and home computer 'tributes' appearing.

Phoenix for the 2600, of course, was Atari's port of the Centuri arcade game which arrived in 1980.
While Phoenix was never a huge hit along the lines of Space Invaders, Galaxian or the fantastic Galaga, it still attracted enough attention to become a port on the 2600.
Once nice touch about the game is the "shimmering" background music which injected a sense of urgency into the arcade game was preserved well in the 2600 port of Phoenix.
