Phoenix was incorporated with a population of approximately 2,500, and on May 3, 1881, Phoenix held its first city election, in which Judge John T. Alsap defeated James D. Monihon, 127 to 107, to become the city's first Mayor.
The Phoenix area is surrounded by the McDowell Mountains to the northeast, the White Tank Mountains to the west, the Superstition Mountains far to the east, and the Sierra Estrella to the southwest.
Phoenix was ranked as the #1 hottest city in the U.S., and #2 as the driest city in the U.S. on The Weather Channel's "Top 10", a program involving with ranking cities on criteria such as hottest, driest, coldest, wettest, windiest, sunniest, snowiest, and most humid.

Mountain View Park was purchased by the city in the 1960s, before any talk of preserves, and in 1976, three acres on a south corner were filled with lawns and playing fields and parking lots like any traditional community park.

In the 1960s residential construction reached the foothills of the Phoenix Mountains and it became obvious that, unless something was done to prevent it, the mountains would eventually be covered with homes.
The Phoenix Mountains Preserve was formed to protect the beauty of the mountains and by 1980 the tops of the major mountains were protected by the preserve.

From here there is a good view of Phoenix to the south.
Following Trail 1A to the left, from the junction, I descended a bit further and then began to follow the trail as it wrapped around a small mountain and headed west.
The view from the point the trail turned to head west was an excellent one as I was able to look through a valley to see a snow-covered Four Peaks to the east.
