PHOLOS was a Kentauros who gave his name to Mount Pholoe in Arkadia.
As for Pholos, as he was pulling an arrow out of a corpse, he marvelled that such a little object could destroy such enormous adversaries.
Pholos was a Kentauros, from whom the neighbouring mountain came to be called Pholoe, and received Herakles with the courtesies due to a guest and opened for him a jar of wine which had been buried in the earth.

Anchiale, daughter of Iapetus, founded Anchiale (a city near Tarsus): her son was Cydnus, who gave his name to the river at Tarsus: the son of Cydnus was Parthenius, from whom the city was called Parthenia: afterwards the name was changed to Tarsus.

Herakles asked for wine, but Pholos said that he was afraid to open the cask which was owned jointly be the Kentauroi.
And for this feat it amae to pass that Herakles was marvelled at exceedingly; for though he had private grounds for hating his enemy [Eurystheus], yet because he pitied her who was being outraged, he determined to be superior to others in humanity.
Herakles gave him a magnificent funeral and buried him at the foot of the mountain, which serves better than a gravestone to preserve his glory; for Pholoe makes known the identity of the buried man by bearing his name and no inscription is needed.

Shallow subtidal sites had higher abundance of Eteone longa, Pholoe minuta, Harmothoe sp., and Castalia (Nereimyra) aphroitoides, whereas Chaetozone setosa and Nephthys neotena dominated deeper sites.
Live molluscs were limited, but large numbers of dead specimens were collected throughout Turton Bay.

To test this hypothesis, results from a field exclusion experiment were compared with 5 laboratory experiments that measured the individual effects of the main crustacean predators of the bay: snow crab, rock crab, and toad crab.
In the field experiment, the exclusion of predators generated clear differences in infaunal composition, and 2 species (the polychaete Pholoe tecta and the clam Macoma calcarea) dominated exclusion treatments.
Predator exclusion also resulted in a significant increase in density, but only a modest increase in infaunal diversity.
