ipedia.com: Analogue disc record Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
An analogue disc record is a flat disc with inscribed spiral grooves, in which the playback process begins with the direct mechanical motion of a stylus riding within the groove as the disc rotates.
Recording on disc as opposed to phonograph cylinder had been contemplated and experimented with by such inventors as Charles Cros, Thomas Edison, and Chichester Bell, but the first to actually develop usable disc record technology was Emil Berliner, a German working in Washington, DC, in 1884.
All speeds of records were made in various sizes, mainly 7, 10 and 12 inches (18,20.5 and 30.5 cm aprox.) diameter; the 7-inch being most common for the 45rpm, the 10-inch for the 78 (and the first few years of 33⅓ production), and the 12-inch for the 33 from the mid 1950s on.

A year later, surrounded by an atmosphere of strict secrecy, that album, Consequences (on Phonogram Records) was debuted before the Phonogram/Mercury sales force in a domed 17th Century church in the heart of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The two hour-plus record began and it became immediately apparent why Phonogram were unwilling to treat it as a normal disc.
Twenty minutes into the presentation, heads began dropping on breastbones and the (unintentionally) funniest moment of the record occurred when snoring came from the speakers as eyes closed around the room.

As some other foreign record companies (RCA, EMI), the Phonogram group also had some independent releases for the italian market that never appeared in other countries, using its different labels such as Polydor, Philips, and sometimes Mercury.
Also distributed by Phonogram were Divergo (that released guitarist Riccardo Zappa's early albums), Mirto (with folk group Carnascialia and composer Claudio Dentes) and Cramps after mid-70's.
All the italian Phonogram LP's and singles had machine stamped catalogue number on the vinyls, but no counterfeits should exist of these releases (the only known italian Polydor counterfeit is the UK band Audience's rare withdrawn first album).
