Phonography was further disadvantaged by being received among the social commonplace of the mechanical recording per se brought about by photography.
The problem has been that phonography has not migrated over the expanse of sound, but has been limited to the reproduction of existing aural cultural forms -- music, poetry and literature, theatre, reportage -- when it could reproduce all these forms at once, inhabit their conventions and break them open to the general aural environment.

Stevie Moore's Phonography was a minor classic of pre-punk D.I.Y. pop, but its initial 1976 pressing was limited to a mere 100 copies, which meant its potential sphere of influence was rather limited.
Four From Phonography distills the album into 11-and-a-half minutes, and wisely showcases not just Moore's knack for catchy power pop in the form of "I Wish I Could Sing" and the early Sparks-like "She Don't Know What to Do With Herself," but also his experimental bent.
Originally released in 1976 in an edition of 100 copies, Phonography was reissued in 1978 and again in 1998 on a limited-edition CD featuring eight bonus tracks recorded during the same 1974-76 sessions.

DJ Smash: Phonography - PopMatters Music Review
Phonography, compiled and mixed by DJ Smash, is a laid-back party mix for lazy afternoons and the quiet calm of late nights and early mornings.
It consists of 14 remixes of songs from Blue Note artists, each done by a different remix artist, all put together in a straightforward fashion by Smash, a DJ who has worked with many of these artists over the years and who did a few of the remixes himself.
Phonography is an entirely pleasant trip; even the tracks that don't excite me much (like Cassandra Wilson & Dianne Reeves' stiff cover of the Beatles' "Come Together", for one) still have an inherently friendly quality about them.

4 From "Phonography" R. Stevie Moore
Stevie Moore's Phonography was a minor classic of pre-punk D.I.Y. pop, but its initial 1976 pressing was limited to a mere 100 copies, which meant its potential sphere of influence was rather limited.
Prior to the full-fledged reissue, Palmer released the 7" EP Four From Phonography, a teaser that attracted a fair amount of attention in New York's burgeoning new wave scene, receiving excellent reviews in magazines like Trouser Press and New York Rocker and radio airplay on stations like the iconoclastic freeform WFMU.
Four From Phonography distills the album into 11-and-a-half minutes, and wisely showcases not just Moore's knack for catchy power pop in the form of "I Wish I Could Sing" and the early Sparks-like "She Don't Know What to Do With Herself," but also his experimental bent.

Unfortunately, the first test pressing from the masters made by the company he dealt with was horrendously bad; the channels were reversed, it had pops, clicks and thumps and it had all of the fidelity drained out of it.
The package contains all of the original artwork for both albums, and all of the cuts were digitally transferred directly from the original master tapes, so at last, everything finally sounds the way it was supposed to without any vinyl-induced hiss, pops or clicks.
