Phony War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In France the period from the official declaration of war on Germany on September 3 until the German invasion of the Benelux and France is known as drôle de guerre ("funny war").
The Phony War is usually held to have lasted until Nazi Germany's assault on The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg on May 10, 1940.
A notable event during the Phony War was the Winter War, which started with the Soviet Union's assault on Finland on November 30, 1939.

The Italian declaration of war in June 1940 challenged the British supremacy of the Mediterranean, hinged on Gibraltar, Malta, and Alexandria.
The North African war proved to be a disaster for Italy, and when the Allies invaded Sicily on July 10 in Operation Husky, capturing the island in a little over a month, the regime of Benito Mussolini collapsed.
It was one of the bloodiest sieges of the war.

Phony Wars for Phony Peace and the Ministry of Fear by Eustace Mullins (March 2003)
The Orwellian doctrine, Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace, has not been updated to the more practical version, "Phony Wars for Phony Peace." The established governments have long since abandoned their exhortations to be patriotic, loyal and sacrificing for the higher good.
In 60 years of studying the causes of wars, and the mechanisms by which they have been achieved, I have employed one of the principal methods of great cooking, that of reduction.
In World War II, almost as an afterthought, they created their American counterpart, the Central Intelligence Agency, a group which has always been characterized by its singular lack of intelligence, as was defined by its supposed lack of knowledge of 9/11.

More than any previous war, World War II involved the commitment of nations’ entire human and economic resources, the blurring of the distinction between combatant and noncombatant, and the expansion of the battlefield to include all of the enemy’s territory.
In the main, however, the war was fought with the same or improved weapons of the types used in World War I. The greatest advances were in aircraft and tanks.
War games had indicated that victory could be achieved in about ten weeks, which was significant because the Russian summer, the ideal time for fighting in the USSR, was short, and the Balkans operations had caused a 3-week delay at the outset.

 The Phony War is Over
This military action is a part of our campaign against terrorism, another front in a war that has already been joined through diplomacy, intelligence, the freezing of financial assets and the arrests of known terrorists by law enforcement agents in 38 countries.
During the Cold War years the United States helped support Islamist forces as a bulwark against radical, secular regimes such as Iraq, Syria and Nasser's Egypt, which were allied with the Soviet Union.
Instead of re-evaluating this misguided policy, the Bush administration, even after declaring war on terrorism, appears to be drifting toward embracing it -- by giving some regimes that sponsor terrorism a pass for their cooperation in a U.S. coalition.

During the Second World War, the United States diverted more than a third — and by some estimates half — of its GNP to defense, despite the fact that real per capita GNP was much smaller than it is now, and thus the margin for such expenditure smaller as well.
As if the war were unreal, the president asked America neither for sacrifice nor for the tools that, knowing that the war is real and may yet become more terrible, America would have granted him to any degree.

Postmortem on a Phony War - Middle East Quarterly - September 2002
Nevertheless, the Bush team fought a classic phony war, because its chief priority was to change as little as possible the visions, objectives, assumptions, and modus operandi of late-twentieth-century American elites.
Thus, from the outset, this was a war defined in terms of what must not be done and aimed at validating a view of the world according to which the war should never have started —that is, a phony war.
The facts of the war on terrorism are as outlined above: in practice, the Bush team is fighting a war to salvage the visions, assumptions, and ways of current elites, not to mention their reputations.

 Column: The Phony War
America has found itself in a situation known in Europe from September, 1939 to April, 1940 as the "Phony War." The bin Laden-inspired airborne devastation of human life on September 11 was as much a Blitzkrieg as Hitler launched at 4:45 am, September 1, 1939 against peaceful Poland.
Thrust upon us is a ghost war -- indeed a phony war in the 1939 sense -- and the White House, occupied as it is by political animals, will squeeze the predicament for every exploitative drop of dramatic politics and bold leadership.
Not only is this war phony lexically, the manly patriotism behind it seems pretentious, emotionally immature, and just plain phony itself, because it's all so overworked and absolutely unnecessary.
