Photodiode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A photodiode is a semiconductor diode that functions as a photodetector.
Photodiodes are packaged with either a window or optical fibre connection, in order to let in the light to the sensitive part of the device.
A photodiode is a p-n junction or p-i-n structure.

OSI Optoelectronics Technical Support FAQ Basic PIN Photodiode Characteristics
Photodiode operates as a voltage source as well a current source in response to the incident light in the wavelength range of 200 nm to 1100 nm.
Increasing the reverse voltage increases the response speed of the photodiode, by reducing the junction capacitance.
This is the slope of the photodiode I-V curve at -10 mV.

 Photodiode
Light falling on the photodiode changes the base current of the transistor, causing the collector current to be amplified.
Phototransistors may be of the two-terminal type, in which the light intensity on the photodiode alone determines the amount of conduction.

 Photodetectors
The FET input op-amp prevents the loading of the photodiode and the voltage at the output is proportional to the current in the photodiode.
So long as the photodiode response to the light is linear, the output voltage is proportional to the light falling on the photodiode.
A photodiode consists of an active p-n junction which is operated in reverse bias.

 Gamma-Photon Radiation Detector - Maxim/Dallas
A PIN photodiode, four low-noise op amps and a comparator are used to detect individual photons of gamma radiation.
Detector sensitivity, for example (the number of photons detected for a given radiation field) depends on the size of the depletion region, which in turn depends on the area of the diode and the amount of reverse bias applied to it.
If you use a high-quality PIN photodiode and an op amp with low current noise, and pay careful attention to design, the limiting factor for noise should be the first-stage op amp's input-voltage noise multiplied by the total capacitance at the op amp's inverting node.

If a shutter in front of a photodiode, open at the time of emission of a 10 to 15 nanosecond pulse of light from a laser source, is closed just before the10 to 15 nanosecond pulse of light is supposed to arrive at the photodiode, the 10to15nanosecond pulse of light still appears at the photodiode.
The first two scope pictures show the photodiode response to light from a laser when 1)the Pockels shutter in front of the laser is pulsed full open for 15 nanoseconds every millisecond and the shutter in front of the photodiode about 30 to 35 feet away is always full open.
One possibility is that when the photodiode shutter is left open all the time the transmissibility of the crystal is greater than when the crystal is electronically pulsed 2000 times a second.

Fujifilm announce SuperCCD SR: Digital Photography Review
Where once a single photodiode* was responsible for capturing the full range of light strengths at a single location on the sensor, Fujifilm has now paired two photodiodes per photosite**: a larger, primary photodiode adjusted for high sensitivity, with the secondary photodiode for lower sensitivity.
The sensitive primary photodiode registers the main volume of light reflected off the subject (similar to a conventional Super CCD photodiode), whilst the secondary photodiode captures highlight information from the same part of the image.
Because it is set at a lower sensitivity than the primary photodiode (in other words, records a darker image), the secondary photodiode is able to 'see' additional detail in bright areas that is beyond the reach of conventional photodiodes.

Avalanche photodiode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are photodetectors that can be regarded as the semiconductor analog to photomultipliers.
Since APD gain varies strongly with the applied reverse bias and temperature, it is necessary to control the reverse voltage in order to keep a stable gain.
Avalanche photodiodes therefore are more sensitive compared to other semiconductor photodiodes.
