The study of deuteron photodisintegration processes as well as the process of quasideuteron photodisintegration on light nuclei are of significant importance for revealing the fundamental concepts of nuclear and elementary particle physics.
Within the framework of deuteron photodisintegration GI-asymptotic amplitude model, based on the meson-hadron degrees of freedom (with possible contribution of nucleon resonances) - model GIAM [11,16], the dependence of cross section asymmetry (S) from Eg was calculated at the energy range Eg=1.0-3.0GeV fig.
These estimates of background and further their experimental definition are important for the stud of the photodisintegration processes on the "quasideuteron", for which the kinematical range of angles expands due to "quasideuteron" fermi motion in the nucleus and its limits are not distinctly defined.

Deuteron Photodisintegration   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Because the cross section for photodisintegration of the deuteron is so small, the modification made is an approximation.
Once a photodisintegration is triggered, the photon is propagated the distance to the interaction point, and an interaction vertex is placed in the data structure.
When this vertex is acted upon, a centre of momentum scattering angle is calculated for the neutron relative to the incoming photon, along with neutron energy, and these are transformed into the lab frame.

The study of electromagnetic interactions with few (two-three) nucleon systems at relatively high energy is a promising channel to investigate these questions, because it is possible to confront calculations based on first principles with precise data.
The incident flux of photons on the target was evaluated from the number of electrons detected in the hodoscope multiplied by the tagging efficiency, i.e.
This result can be considered a further indication that a pQCD interpretation of the deuteron photodisintegration process may not be adequate in the measured energy region and that a complete non perturbative theory is necessary.

Lifetimes of Nuclei in the r-Process   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Because of the comparatively long beta-decay lifetime (as compared to captures and photodisintegrations) the r-process nucleosynthesis is halted until a sufficient amount of these equilibrated nuclei has decayed.
The lifetime for photodisintegration is given as a red line, the one for neutron capture by a green line, beta-decay lifetimes (taken from Möller, Nix, Kratz, At.
Because capture and photodisintegration are related by detailed balance, changing one means changing the other by the same factor.

 EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The primary goal of the photon scattering is to measure the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of both free and bound nucleons.
The photodisintegration studies concentrate on precision measurements of the photodisintegration of light nuclei, such as deuterium.
The deuteron photodisintegration is one of the most fundamental processes in all of nuclear physics and involves such questions as the form of the nuclear current operator, the role of relativity, and mesonic exchange currents.

Hard Photodisintegration of a Proton Pair
A series of high-energy, hard-photodisintegration experiments of the deuteron have been performed in order to study the dynamics of the transition from the hadronic to the quark-gluon description of the strong interaction [Nap88].
At present, it appears that hard photodisintegration is an intractable problem in meson-baryon theories, and that the quarks are the relevant degrees of freedom, but they cannot be described through perturbative QCD (pQCD).
The goal of the experiment is to study new features predicted by [Bro03]: the main prediction, in contrast with low-energy observations, is that the pp breakup cross section is not much smaller than that for pn breakup.

This is an excellent and concise review of experimental approaches to study low-energy photodisintegration cross sections with special emphasis on applications in Nuclear Astrophysics.
It should be pointed out, however, that - despite of advanced experimental efforts - photodisintegration techniques can only probe a few of the gamma-transitions important for the calculation of astrophysical reaction rates.
Therefore, they can be helpful to perform limited tests of theory but they will not be able to directly measure stellar photodisintegration rates.

On the other hand the discrepancy of different experimental results and their disparity with theoretical ones should be noted.
It could be understood taking into account that only single charged particle was registered in experimental investigations of photodisintegration of nuclei, in particular lithium.
So the immediate experimental investigation of multiparticle disintegrations is essential for the theoretical treatment of the photodisintegration of these nuclei.

The interesting possibility of measuring the masses of high energy cosmic ray particles by observing pairs of extensive air showers arriving at the earth nearly simultaneously was proposed some years ago by Gerasimova and Zatsepin (1960).
Such showers would be created by the nuclear fragments originating as a result of the photodisintegration of massive nuclei interacting with the solar radiation field.

I am beginning to develop event selection analysis for photodisintegration of the deuteron.
In this reaction channel (which I am still trying to understand) we are in the limit of Q^{2}->0 (the photon is real) and thus the "scattered" electron goes down the beam pipe.
Events where a Cerenkov detector fire are to be discarded (thus eliminating forward angle positrons), but this aids us little in the backward angle, as in the event shown below, where there are no Cerenkovs.
