Photodynamic Therapy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Photodynamic therapy, which uses a red laser and a light-sensitive drug to destroy cancer cells without harming normal tissue, represents a promising new treatment option for patients with throat or oral cancers, according to a voice and swallowing specialist at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
“Photodynamic therapy is the only thing that kills the cancerous tissue and the precancerous tissue, but not the normal tissue,” says Dr. Castellanos, who is also an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
In photodynamic therapy, the red laser’s concentrated beam of light activates the Photofrin to produce a toxic form of oxygen that kills the cancer cells without harming the adjacent tissue.

Photodynamic therapy has been used on an experimental basis during surgery to help prevent the recurrence of mesothelioma cancer in the lining of the lungs or pleura.
In one clinical trial of 26 patients, photodynamic therapy was combined with either of two types of surgery—a pleurectomy or an extrapleural pneumonectomy (Ann Thorac Surg.
Currently, other studies are exploring the interaction of surgery and photodynamic therapy using the photosensitizer porfimer sodium, a drug commonly used in photodynamic treatment of non–small cell lung cancer that affects the bronchi.

Photodynamic Therapy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
By Jason S. Slakter, M.D. Photodynamic therapy is a form of treatment for the "wet" or exudative form of age-related macular degeneration.
The concept of photodynamic therapy is to selectively close the abnormal blood vessels, eliminating the leakage and bleeding, and stabilizing or improving the vision.
With the development of other techniques, including medications and perhaps other forms of therapy, we hope to have a better approach to the management of patients with this disease, including for those in which photodynamic therapy is not an option.

Photodynamic therapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), developed at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the 1970's, is a ternary treatment for cancer involving three key components: a photosensitizer, light, and tissue oxygen.
It is also being investigated for treatment of psoriasis and acne, and is an approved treatment for wet macular degeneration.
In photodynamic therapy, either a photosensitizer or the metabolic precursor of one is administered to the patient.

 Photodynamic therapy for macular degeneration
It has declared that photodynamic therapy for wet type age related macular degeneration is cost-effective, and health authorities should provide the treatment.
Even without these costs, the health economics of photodynamic therapy were favourable, and showed better cost effectiveness with early treatment in people with wet-type macular degeneration with better visual acuity.
In places like the UK where this therapy is rationed despite fourth hurdle guidance to the contrary, this emphasises that delay wastes money and makes people worse, both in visual health terms and in overall quality of life.
