  Flash (photo)
A photographic flash is a device that produces a flash of light required for indoor or other low light conditions.
The earliest flashes consisted a lump of magnesium powder that was ignited by hand.
Todays flash units are fully electronic, and contains a Xenon gas filled tube where electricity of high voltage is discharged to generate a short flash of light.

An electronic flash contains a tube filled with xenon gas, where electricity of high voltage is discharged to generate an electrical arc that emits a short flash of light.
A fill flash is a low powered flash mixed with ambient light, and is often used to illuminate shadows on the side of a subject facing the camera.

The Flash Doctor - Free Flash Capacitor Maintenance Tips
Flash Capacitors must be pampered; this is accomplished by forming the flash capacitor as much as possible.
Flash power supplies that are not used on a daily basis, or ones that are stored for long periods of time definitely need forming.
Electronic Flash Units that are inactive for months at a time it is advisable to form the capacitors for 6-8 hours each day over a 3 day period prior to using it on an assignment.

Switch control for camera flash unit - Patent 4285589
The electronic flash of claim 5 wherein the actuator assembly housing includes a plurality of wall portions which are complementary to respective portions of the exposure control housing forward, side and rearward walls without obstructing access to the photographic exposure cycle initiating button.
However, electronic flash units are generally configured to be detachable from the top of the lens housing portion of the camera thereby making it inconvenient for a grip switch, which constitutes an integral part of the camera, to control the detachable electronic flash unit.
The electronic flash switch actuator 100 of the present invention is thus desirably mounted on the camera so that the push button 112 is readily reachable by the photographer's camera-operating hand when such hand is in a normal position to operate the photographic cycle initiating button S1 of the camera.

 High Speed Photography
Electronic flash is now standard photographic equipment and is used not only when the available light is too weak but, with an open shutter, to arrest motion due to the shortness of the flash.
Flash bombs are tubes containing argon with a transparent end window and a small explosive charge at the opposite end.
For example, when photographing the action of guns and their projectiles, a pick-up to detect the initiating explosion or the projectile's shock wave can be used to trigger or start the light source and, when necessary, the shutter.

Photographic flash device - Patent 4276579
The present invention relates to a photographic flash device which is an artificial light source in the case of photography and more particularly a photographic flash device capable of easily varying the flash light or beam emission angle from a flash tube.
Accordingly, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a photographic flash device wherein the exposable distance range may be automatically changed when the flash light emission angle is made variable so that it is not needed to obtain the allowable flash exposure distance range by the operations of other exposure data.
1 is shown in perspective an embodiment of a photographic flash device in accordance with the present invention.

Adaptor for photographic flash device   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In photographing with a photographic flash device, it is well known to set up an optical supplementary means such as optical panel, for instance, light converging panel, light diffusing panel, light attenuator or color balancing filter, in front of a flashing part of the flash device.
Both sides of the body 9 of the flash device, respectively, are equipped with indent parts 11, 11' which are to be engaged in the convex parts 7, 7' on the resilient memebers 5, 5', respectively, for fixing the adaptor to the flash device body 9.
After photographing, the adaptor 1 is easily demounted from the flash device body 9 by being pulled toward the arrow mark, thereby disengaging the convex parts 7, 7' on the resilient members 5, 5' from the indent parts 11, 11' on the body 9.

In addition to producing flashes, the stimulator must be capable of producing a steady and even background luminance of at least 17-34 cd.m-2 (5 to 10 fL) across the full field.
A photographer's light meter is ordinarily used in one of two basic modes: it may be pointed at the "scene" to be photographed, in which case it measures reflected light, the (steady-state) "luminance" of the scene (SI units: cd/m
The spectral sensitivity curve for photographic meters is intended to reproduce V-lambda, the standard spectral sensitivity curve for human photopic vision, but may be modified by the manufacturers to more closely resemble the response of photographic emulsions.

Flash synchronization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a camera, flash synchronization is required for the firing of a photographic flash to coincide with the shutter admitting light to the photographic film.
Note that due to their construction, focal plane shutters as used on most SLRs will only allow xenon flash units to be used at shutter speeds where the entire film is open at once, typically at shutter speeds of 1/60 or slower, but some modern cameras may have an X-sync speed as high as 1/500.
The downside is that the flash is of less effective intensity since the individual bursts are lower powered than the normal capability of the flash unit.

I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for photographic cameras excluding cinematographic cameras; photographic flash apparatus and bulbs excluding electric filament, discharge, or arc lamps; and associated parts and accessories for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports.
Chapter 4 does the same, but for imports of photographic cameras excluding cinematographic cameras; photographic flash apparatus and bulbs excluding electric filament, discharge, or arc lamps; and associated parts and accessories for all countries in the world.
The SITC code that defined "photographic cameras excluding cinematographic cameras; photographic flash apparatus and bulbs excluding electric filament, discharge, or arc lamps; and associated parts and accessories" is 8811.

ProDaylight, which is Profoto's for the lamp head that uses HMI and MSR lamps, is meant to imply that this continuous source of light maintains largely the same temperature as given off by the flash, or by real daylight (around 6000 degrees Kelvin).
In order to cope with the heat of repeated flashes utilizing high energy, it is necessary to make the material in a flash-tube out of quartz.
For practical uses, however, there are simple temperature meters that measure the spectrum of the light at three points, to give an approximate evaluation.

A and N Photography: Flash sync voltage on the hotshoe x-sync connector
Below are images of the flash unit under test, the test probes and the actual measurement of the X-sync voltage displayed on the Fluke 77 Multimeter.
The X-sync voltage on the Vivitar 285HV flash is low enough for Nikon cameras, based on the statement in their user manuals, but not for some Canon cameras which claim a maximum voltage of 6V on their hotshoe connectors.
Measuring this flash unit was scary because there is no external connecting cable available so the meter probes had to be stuffed into the hotshoe mechanical assembly and held while the Kodak Easyshare CX7530 fired off the self-timer.

With strobes, nothing is shining in their eyes, and the flash is too short to cause any of this discomfort to our beloved subjects (until AFTER the flash, when they might be chasing all those little light blips around the room:).
Sometimes a full power flash is too powerful for the effect we're after; other times we may want to reduce the illumination to create a different mood.
In people pictures, for a head shot (that's what photographers call a picture of a person's face, often the face and shoulders), we often want part of the face highlighted, and the other part of the face in a light to medium shadow.

And on the E-300 it does seem pretty effective, as you can see from the image on the left hot pixel noise is sprinkled liberally all over the image without NR, switched on it's all gone and there are no fl pit NR artifacts either.
In some circumstances the E-300's flash appeared to work perfectly well (see color patches sample below), however we did find it to be perhaps affected by the same metering problem as normal non-flash exposures (see the bottom of this page).
As you can see the very first shot, no flash exposure compensation is quite under-exposed, as we add a little flash exposure compensation things improve slightly but it's clear that the actual flash power should have been between 1.0 and 1.7 EV more than was metered.
