Almost two years ago we traveled to Peru, and unlike Peru, the airport in Belize was less chaotic; the place was much smaller, it lacked the hordes of illicit cab drivers shouting at the plane load of tourists, and fewer pedestrians crowded the rooms.
Also absent in the Belize airport was the line of impoverished, uniformed laborers waiting to board and clean the large American plane just as it's engines were winding down.
Here, all fauna are presented in their natural habitat with minimal human zoo-construction.

Traditionally said to be from the Spanish pronunciation of Wallace, the name of the pirate who created the first settlement in Belize in 1638.
Belize has a small open economy, and its principal sectors are currently (1) agriculture, (2) manufacturing, which primarily includes agro-products such as sugar and citrus products, and (3) services, which includes primarily tourism.
The preferential arrangements are at odds with the move toward free trade at the turn of the century, and it is envisaged that such arrangements will gradually be phased out.

Belize, despite being a tiny piece of land in Central America (the size of Massachusetts), is jam-packed with exotic adventure trips from a stretch of jungle-draped mountains along its western border with Guatemala to a dazzling barrier reef along much of its Caribbean coastline along its eastern border.
I was disturbed by the fact that often, at archeologically significant sites, there seems to be too much tourist access to fragile artifacts, unlike in America, where you would expect such things to be at least roped off.

We dove twice with Cancun's Solo Buceo to nearby reefs, and then, for our two youngest children who are not yet divers, made a trip south to the tiny fishing village of Puerto Morelos to snorkel the reefs there.
I shot a couple of hundred photographs on my venerable Olympus C4000 digital camera, using the Olympus PT-10 underwater housing I purchased 3 years ago for it.
Probably close to six feet long, I was content to have a photograph of him sitting in the back of his lair, when suddenly he exited through a back entrance.
