Belize is a great location for caves because of its wet climate and plentiful limestone.
The Belize Zoo is probably the finest zoo in the Americas, south of the U.S. The zoo originally opened in 1983 and is well-known for its phenomenal conservation achievement.
It is the outermost of the three atolls (45 to 50 miles east of Belize City) and is a universe of diving in itself.

It is generally thought that the population of what is now Belize was considerably greater during the Classic Maya Period than it is today; the plethora of Maya sites in the country today is testimony to this.
Belize clearly lay in the Maya heartland: not only are some of the earliest sites, like that of Cuello in Orange Walk, found in the country, but the recent discovery of glyphs at Caracol, Cayo District, apparently portraying a military victory over Tikal suggests that some of the Belizean centres were supreme in the region.
As a result, wildlife is already on the increase in 1986 it was estimated that at least three families of howler monkeys were residing in the central portio of the reserve alone.

 World Class Diving Destinations
Windsurfing: I never thought of Belize as a "mecca" for wind surfing (like some Caribbean islands) The winds are especially good for surfing and there is a place to rent sail boards and wind surfers, in a palapa on the beach behind the Holiday Hotel.(barbeque on Wed nights) near Bottom Time Dive shop.
I hope Belize keeps its low profile, It is not a place for "pretentious attitudes" and I hope those types stay away from Belize.
Belize is a place you will want to come back to.

The University of Texas in conjunction with The Programme for Belize Archaeological Project is excavating Mayan sites within the Rio Bravo Conservation Area (a protected reserve within the Belizian Jungle for flora, fauna, and archaeological remains).
There are more than 50 sites present in the current focus area and during my limited time in Belize I had the opportunity to work at 4 sites and visit numerous others.
I will be working on this page during the next month to include my photographs and impressions of the small homestead sites, burials, and monuments that I was privleged to assist in excavating, as well as my "vacation" time in western Belize, Guatemala and the Belizian island of Caye Caulker.
