 Photogravure Printing Process
A photogravure is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate.
A photogravure looks like a photograph but is a series of connected lines, rather than unconnected dots as in a photograph.
PLACING THE PAPER ON THE PLATE-The photogravure process is one in which ink from the plate is forced from the grooves onto the paper by the pressure of the press.

Notes on polymer photogravure, by Strange Ross   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Polymer photogravure (or photopolymer gravure) is a nontoxic technique by which it is possible, from regular photographic negatives, to produce intaglio prints.
Although the photogravure process cannot produce the extremely white tones of photographic papers incorporating "optic white", it does produce a full range of tones from the white of the paper base itself to a deep, velvety fl (depending on the tone of the printing ink).
Since the photogravure process is able to produce very subtle differences in tone, the felt employed in the printing press may transfer an image of its structure to the print, which proved to be the case for the possibly not absolutely topnotch felt I am using.

The Process of Photogravure - Coup de Foudre, LLC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The photogravure process was developed in the 1850s, and involves producing a photographic image from an engraving plate to create a print that has the subtlety of a photograph and the aesthetic quality of a lithograph.
Meanwhile, the paper onto which the photogravure is to be applied must be cut, uniformly dampened, and stored in that condition in order to provide the ideal printing surface.
Though a photogravure looks like a photograph, it is actually a series of connected lines, unlike the disconnected dots that make up a photograph.

They are immediately distinguishable from the other two types by their platemark, resulting from the pressure of drawing the ink out of the recess of the plate and into the paper.
In a gravure print (also known as photogravure, héliogravure, or gravure à l'aquatinte), the tones and variations in light and shadow, and the textures of various surfaces, are the distinguishing features.
The unique look of photogravure depends on the variable depth of the etching, the ability of the copperplate to transfer far more ink to the shadows than to the highlights of the print, and to register subtle gradation of tone.

Swan, and Karl Klic, the photogravure process was popularized by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward S. Curtis, and Paul Strand.
He chose photogravure because he thought is was the only high quality alternative to making 5,000 platinum prints.
One uncommon aspect of Strand's photogravures was that he insisted on making the film positives needed for exposing the printing plates himself, rather than rely on the printers to do so.

In the photogravure, the detail is so fine (evident only at 50x magnification) that the deposit of ink appears translucent, perhaps allowing some of the light of the paper support to shine through, thus introducing a gray appearance to the fl medium.
