Photoplay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Photoplay was one of the first film fan magazines.
Photoplay began as a short-fiction magazine concerned mostly with the plots and characters of films at the time and was used as a promotional tool for those films.
Photoplay merged with another fan magazine, Movie Mirror, in 1941; and changed again in 1977, when the name became Photoplay and TV Mirror.

The Project Gutenberg eBook of The Photoplay: A Psychological Study, by Hugo Münsterberg.
In the language of the photoplay producers it is a "close-up." The close-up has objectified in our world of perception our mental act of attention and by it has furnished art with a means which far transcends the power of any theater stage.
One great and fundamental suggestion is working in both cases, inasmuch as the drama as well as the photoplay suggests to the mind of the spectator that this is more than mere play, that it is life which we witness.
The emotional expression in the photoplays is therefore often more natural in the small rôles which the outsiders play than in the chief parts of the professionals who feel that they must outdo nature.

Photoplay Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The idea that early films were not accompanied by music is supported by the fact that almost no photoplay music was published before 1913 (films having been shown since the mid 1890s), implying that there may not have been a demand in the early years.
Most photoplay music composers were serious classical musicians, working in what they felt was a novel (and economically viable) new field of classical music.
In the days before radio was widespread, photoplay music was probably the most commonly heard form of music in America, and contributed greatly to the development of the general public's musical taste.

Writing - Setting In The Photoplay
While several photoplays with extremely elaborate settings have been produced, such as, "Intolerance," "Foolish Wives," and several others, these photoplays without exception were arranged by the directors themselves with concrete knowledge of exactly what they could and could not do, A manuscript of this character is almost never bought from an amateur.
Effect of Setting on Plot.—To show one way in which the setting may influence the action of your photoplay, sup-pose, for example, that a young girl of very ordinary education and of poor circumstances falls in love with and is married to a young man about her own age.
While it is not advisable to write a photoplay in which all the scenes are of a historical nature, yet it is frequently advantageous and desirable to introduce a few historical scenes of a more or less allegorical nature.

 Writing - The Photoplay Stage
The photoplay stage, then, may seem to the beginner to be quite a large area; but, in reality, it is not so large as it at first seems.
The fact of the matter is, when an actor is standing within fifteen o twenty feet of the camera, he must be cautious in his movements or he will get out of the picture; that is, he will step outside the range of the camera, and will not appear on the screen.
It would be possible to have the villain in your story abduct the heroine and carry her away in a dirigible, but we do not believe your manuscript would be accepted if you wrote such impracticable situations.

 Cinema's Multimedia Moment
While showing that the photoplay inherits a great deal from the stage, masques and pageants, painting, sculpture, music, and the methods of the novelist, Freeburg insisted that the "cinema is a new art distinct from all the other arts which were invented and have been developed before it" (205).
The photoplay is as far from the stage on the one hand as it is from the novel on the other.
The idea of the photoplay (through which a part of the language of cinema is developed) is overlooked; and along with it the futures critics such as Freeburg and Lindsay imagined for the medium, its "users" and "composers".

 How to Write a Photoplay
One of the most important things for the photoplay author to learn is the proper applying of technique and knowing where an insert is needed, a leader required, a cut-back necessary and a flash called for and where a bust or break should be placed.
The principles and methods of photoplay writing are much more easily defined and learned than are the principles that apply to the legitimate stage, and yet in the analysis of the ordinary photoplay of the amateur such stories lack the proper placing of technique.
The art of photoplay writing is unquestionably an interesting one and it is all the more interesting when the author learns to apply technique in the proper place.

The photoplay plot, then, is a record of struggle, a history of conflict—man's struggle with nature, man against man, man against society, man against temptations.
