It is a member of the carp family (family Cyprinidae) of order Cypriniformes, and is the type species of genus Phoxinus.
This fish is the archetypal minnow, and is also known as the common or European minnow.

 Cypriniformes Tree of Life
General Description: The genus Phoxinus is holarctic in distribution and contains at least 20 species that are both beautifully colored when in breeding condition and possess interesting distributions and behaviors for comparative evolutionary studies.
In this study we hope to examine all species of Phoxinus and multiple samples of each species for six nuclear and mitochondrial genes.
If you are interested in joining this project please contact the identified person and outline your intended contributions so that we may make rapid progress on resolving the phylogeny and examine the comparative evolution and biogeography of these fishes.

Interactive effects of flood frequency and southern redbelly dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster) on stream ecosystem ...
We designed an experiment in experimental streams to measure the ecosystem response to different flooding frequencies and the presence or absence of southern redbelly dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster), a grazing minnow.
The two principle response variables were stream metabolism and nutrient retention, but we also quantified algal filament length, algal biomass, algal community composition, invertebrate community composition, and fractionation of benthic organic matter.
Preliminary results suggest ecosystem processes in prairie streams are dually controlled by grazing and flooding, but floods facilitate the control of algae by grazing minnows.

 Alarm Pheromones in Fish
Christopher Bosio Spring 1994 Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado 80523 Introduction Karl von Frisch (1941) first demonstrated that when the European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus is eaten by a predator, damage to the skin releases an alarm substance ("Schreckstoff", or scary stuff) that elicits a fright reaction in conspecifics.
Exploring is also consistent with "predator inspection behavior" (sensu Magurran 1986) seen in the European minnow Phoxinus phoxinus.
It was concluded that this compound is the active component or most important active component in the alarm pheromone.

Temperature-dependent development of cardiac activity in unrestrained larvae of the minnow Phoxinus phoxinus.
The minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) was raised up to the stage of swimbladder inflation at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C, and the time of development significantly decreased at higher temperatures.
Accordingly, initiation of cardiac activity was observed at day 2 in 25°C animals and at day 4 in 12.5°C animals.
