  Phrack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phrack is an underground ezine made by and for hackers that has been around since November 17, 1985.
Phrack is especially popular due to the general high standard of the releases compared to other underground zines, articles such as Aleph1's 'Smashing The Stack For Fun And Profit' and The Mentor's 'Hacker Manifesto'.
To commemorate Phrack's final appearance, this issue was to be a hardback edition, released simultaneously at the DEF CON and What the Hack conventions on July 29.

 Phrack 63 released!!!
Phrack magazine is a Phreak-Hack magazine founded in the 80s on an old bbs (i think ran on an apple2e) (a bbs is an old message forum people would dial into back in the days) known as MetalShop.
Phracks grown from being an old zine that promoted the old h/p/a(yes, anarchy; explosives, zipguns, carding, among other things) into a decent technicial journal.
i'm not as technical oriented myself, i enjoyed phrack in its earlier years when it gave a better insight into the scene, thoughts and motives of the folks of that time/era as opposed to the technical info thats in it now thats great for reference, but i'll never find any nostalgia for.

I love the fact that a bunch of information that was in the public domain was said to be worth tens of thousands of dollars and to be very dangerous to the public.

Later, Phrack "Pro-Philes" gave stories behind the handles and let people learn what made the more famous or infamous hackers what they were.
Instead of putting out a singular file by themselves, hackers and writers were encouraged to become part of the PHRACK brand, ensuring a wide audience for their writings and preventing themselves from being lost in the extremely choppy distribution channels of BBSes.
Speaking of Choppy, PHRACK's own history is very difficult to keep track of without a scorecard (which actually shows up in Issue #55!).

Yet surprising to many will be the fact the antivirus and security industries are actually coming out to say they will be sorry to see the back of the title which was run by, and for the benefit of, those they seek to thwart.
The sixty-third and final edition of Phrack will come out as a hardback collectors copy and will be available to attendees at the DefCon hackers conference in Las Vegas between 29 and 31 July as well as the What The Hack conference in the Netherlands on 28 to 31 July.

After starting in November 1985, Phrack became probably the first magazine with electronic distribution, and that was via dial-up connections to a BBS (bulletin-board system).
Phrack moved on to other computer security topics, but an in-depth discussion of the inner workings of Enhanced 911 service earned the publishers an unpleasant visit from the Secret Service in 1990.
Phrack has put out its usual call for papers on the topics nearest and dearest to its publishers: spying, cryptography, anarchy, and world news among other topics.

Diet Phrack is also the long-awaited sequel to Phrack 13 (which some consider the most worthless issue ever, but its probably because they weren't a part of Phrack's main circle of friends and didn't understand all the private jokes).
Phrack is about technology, how to create it, how to use it, and the implications that always arise from it.

These days PHRACK is also read by individuals, companies and agencies who do not value the magazine and the authors (under DMCA, PHRACK might even be forbidden).
Research is free, the magazine is free, but now the phrack approval and review process provides it free to the contributing authors 2 weeks earlier.
PHRACK 59 will be released in 3 steps: 2002-07-13: Limited release to contributing authors and volunteer reviewers.

 Hacker magazine shuts up shop | The Register
Phrack editor Knight Lightning was indicted for reprinting the contents of a "confidential" document, called E911, but the case against him collapsed after it was revealed the E911 could be purchased over the phone for $13.
The magazine is made available to the public, as often as possible, and free of charge with content republished on Phrack's website.
In a statement, Phrack outgoing editorial team said it would hand over to a new group that wanted to restart the magazine.

 Phrack Classic Volume Three, Issue 32, File #1 of XX Phrack Classic Newsletter Issue XXXII
I feel Phrack Classic is written for hackers, yes, but I also feel that a hacker is one "who enjoys pushing the envelope, bypassing limits, discovering knowledge, inventing solutions, adventuring into uncharted areas." So is it so wrong to publish a newsletter for the exchange of free information?
Prior to Phrack I had released a huge glossary of telecommunications terms and files about the divestiture of AT&T and its aftermath.
I hope that Phrack Classic which appears to be a second generation Phrack will learn from its predecessor and not allow any articles that advocate the illegal entry into computer systems.

Phrack Magazine's beloved founders, Taran King and Knight Lightning, have gone off to college, and the recent busts (summarized completely in this month's Phrack World News) have made it difficult to keep the magazine going.
The Phrack Inc. VMS is no longer in service and messages will not be received there by anyone.
Phrack Inc. is now in the hands of Sir Francis Drake, Elric Of Imrryr, and Shooting Shark.

CERT had been on the Phrack mailing list previously, and was sent a copy of 42 (as was everyone) to give them the opportunity to subscribe.
Even if fined, Phrack could not be forced to sell its computer equipment to pay fines, since this would be removing the livelihood of the publisher, thus it would continue its quarterly publication.
Any lawyer would laugh at the thought of suing Phrack since it would gain nothing financially, and provide such a huge amount of bad publicity that even if a judgement were reached in their behalf it would not be worth it.

Phrack World News is merely a sub-article of Phrack Inc. and it is written by Knight Lightning.
He also claims that he has submitted articles for Phrack, but was turned down because they were original files.
Dead Lord's file was refused for Phrack Inc. The clincher however was in finding that Dead Lord was actually Executive Hacker, and I'm sure that many of you noticed that CEO, the group the Executive Hacker belongs to, was highlighted and not ragged on.

 Slashdot | Phrack 55 released
Phrack is underground magazine that started in the days of phreaking.
Now adays, and in the old days phrack exposes new security holes, gives ideas about new directions to look for security holes (as in the last issue when they mentioned client apps should be invesitigated - over servers).
Phrack is almost always a difficult read, but new releases always mean more tools for script kiddies to run around with for a month or two.

Since The Mad Chemist and Sir Francis Drake, as well as myself, are moving on to other things, the editorship of Phrack Inc. may be changing with the release of Phrack Eighteen.
Phrack will go on, I'm sure, for another seventeen issues at least, and will continue to be a primary monument to the vitality of the hacker culture.
Besides PHRACK (which had a bad period but hopefully we're back for good) there is 2600, and Syndicate Report.

 Famous Hacker Magazine Shuts Down
In a note posted on the Phrack Web site, the publishers said they will keep the site up and running for at least two years after the final edition.
First released on the dial-up BBS (bulletin-board system), Phrack is widely considered to be the first electronically distributed magazine.
The popular Hacker Manifesto was released in the seventh issue of Phrack and has served as a rallying cry for young hackers ever since the mid-1980s.
