  Phragmipedium: genus description and species list
The newly discovered (first published in June 2002) species Phragmipedium kovachii, shown at right, is deep fuschia in color and as large as a human hand!
It is simply amazing that such a marvelously colorful and beautiful organism went undiscovered until the 21st century and illustrates more than ever the need to protect tropical habitats worldwide so that treasures like this are not lost forever (before they are even identified) due to overdevelopment or other indiscriminant land transformation for human use.
Many Phragmipedium (usually referred to by growers as simply "Phrags") dwell high in the Andes and thrive under cool conditions.

  Phragmipedium Orchid Culture
Some grow Phragmipedium with the pot sitting in a small tray of water, perhaps 1 cm deep, to provide continuous moisture.
Phragmipedium do best with 60-70% humidity but when mature will grow and bloom, although more slowly, in lower humidity.
Phragmipedium often provide much superior flower size and color as mature plants than as first bloom seedlings.

Phragmipedium Calurum is a man-made hybrid between the species Phragmipedium longifolium and the hybrid Phragmipedium Sedenii, first registered in 1883.
Phragmipedium is a genus of "Ladyslipper" orchids native to Central and South America.
Phragmipedium Calurum 'Lydia Merkle' Am/Aos was purchased as a small seedling from Hoosier Orchids, Indianapolis, Indiana in 1993.

Phragmipediums originate from the tropical areas of Central and South America, including areas of southern Mexico south to Brazil.
Phragmipediums are generally found on mountain slopes with constant water seepage at the root zone.
Phragmipediums need to be potted in a media that retains moisture and provides good air circulation to the root zone.

Later in 1886 Pfitzer united the phragmipediums and the paphiopedilums in one group called Paphiopedilum, where the American species were first referred to as Paphiopedilum sect.
It is true that the oldest name of Phragmipedium is Uropedium but it did not became a common name because Lindley only used it for a somewhat peculiar plant, the current Phragmipedium lindenii.
With this species the lip is replaced by a third petal and therefore did not seem to fit in the group and was often called a monstrosity.
