Molecule of the Month - Phthalocyanine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The word phthalocyanine - from the Greek for naphtha (rock oil) and cyanine (blue) was first used by Linstead in 1933 to describe a new class of organic compounds.
Phthalocyanine itself was probably discovered by accident in 1907, as a by-product during the synthesis of o-cyanobenzamide, but it was not until almost 20 years later that a patent was filed describing a manufacturing process.
Phthalocyanine has been widely exploited in industry and academia, in a variety of applications ranging from conventional dye stuffs to catalysis, coatings for read/write CD-ROM's and as an anti-cancer agent.

Phthalocyanine - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
A phthalocyanine is a macrocyclic compound having an alternating nitrogen atom-carbon atom ring structure.
The structure of a phthalocyanine molecule is closely related to that of the naturally occurring porphyrin systems.
The phthalocyanine macrocycle is also related to some other macrocyclic complexes, as e.g., the subphthalocyanine, superphthalocyanine or hemiporphyrazine.

Phthalocyanine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
When a copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, aluminum, platinum, or iron anion is inserted in a phthalocyanine molecule, the resulting salt is quite stable.
The structure of a phthalocyanine molecule closely resembles that of porphyrin, whose structure plays an important role in living bodies.
Therefore the electron transfer in phthalocyanine is related to the energy transfer in organisms.

It's In the Dye   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Phthalocyanine dye burns cleaner than any other dye in the marketplace right now, thus ensuring the best quality available in data recording.
Along with this higher quality, Phthalocyanine has the longest lifetime of any photosensitive dye, guaranteeing that your product will be around for at least 100 years (estimated lifetime for Silver CD-R is 100 years; Gold CD-r is 300 years).
Phthalocyanine is clearly the industry leader in providing accurate data recording at affordable prices.

 handprint : synthetic organic pigments
For example, both the blue and green phthalocyanines and the orange to magenta quinacridones are among the most transparent synthetic organic pigments available, although they can be quite staining; the phthalocyanines are also among the most lightfast.
The structure of alpha phthalocyanine blue (PB15:3) is representative: four carbon rings linked into a flat plate by carbon and nitrogen; the metal atom (in this case, copper) bonds to two of the four inner nitrogen atoms.
Phthalocyanine is an indispensable pigment in the green part of the color circle: PG7 or PG36 are base ingredients for a wide range of convenience green mixtures.

Phthalocyanine (and Related Macrocycles) Single-Crystal Structure Reviews
For 30 years, these were the only phthalocyanine crystal structures until mid of the 1960s computer-controlled diffractometers became available - and with it, many new structures were determined.
At that time, I was told that the sensitivity of phthalocyanine photoconductors depend on the crystal structure but I soon found out that nobody actually knew how phthalocyanines were arranged.
If you are interested in knowing more about phthalocyanine crystal structures, I would like to draw your attention to the "Structural Chemistry of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines" symposium at the Third International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP-3) (July 11-16, 2004 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.), which I will be chairing together with Prof.

 MAM-A | Technology
Contrary to the two other types of dye with linear molecular structure, Phthalocyanine has an annular structure, thus offering the benefit of solidity by forming a strong and extremely stable chemical bond.
MAM invented Phthalocyanine and has a world patent on the substance.
Like Cyanine, the dye is less stable than the Phthalocyanine, has a higher BLER rate when recording, and consequently a shorter lifespan.

Phthalocyanine is today's leading proponent of Brute Techno, the attitude that the most authentic and vital techno is not future music made by a youth cyberpop culture, but is instead contemporary folk music made by outsider or formally untrained fine artists.
He (aka Dimitri Fergadis) presents these ideas on the Phthalo label by releasing a wide range of explorers whom seem to be at home with not feeling at home.
