Phthiotis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phthiotis, or (Greek, Modern: Φθιώτιδα - Fthiótida, Ancient/Katharevousa: Φθιώτις; see also List of traditional Greek place names) is one of the prefectures of Greece.
The modern prefecture was created during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and was known as Phthiotis and Phocis until 1947 when the old southern part became the modern Phocis prefecture and the name changed to the modern-day Phthiotis.
Mountains dominate the south, the southwest, the further west and the north.

Gutenkarte » The History of the Peloponnesian War » Phthiotis
Before the Trojan war there is no indication of any common action in Hellas, nor indeed of the universal prevalence of the name; on the contrary, before the time of Hellen, son of Deucalion, no such appellation existed, but the country went by the names of the different tribes, in particular of the Pelasgian.
It was not till Hellen and his sons grew strong in Phthiotis, and were invited as allies into the other cities, that one by one they gradually acquired from the connection the name of Hellenes; though a long time elapsed before that name could fasten itself upon all.
Born long after the Trojan War, he nowhere calls all of them by that name, nor indeed any of them except the followers of Achilles from Phthiotis, who were the original Hellenes: in his poems they are called Danaans, Argives, and Achaeans.

 Achaea, Greek Mythology Link.
Thessalian Achaea is the land later known by the names of Phthiotis and Hellas, and both this territory and Peloponnesian Achaea own their names to Achaeus 1, son of Xuthus 1, brother of Aeolus 1 and son of Hellen 1, son of Deucalion 1, the man who survived the Flood.
And yet some have said that Achaea was named after Achaeus 2, son of Poseidon and Larisa 1, the woman after whom the citadel of Argos and two cities in Thessaly were named.
Xuthus 1's son Achaeus 1 gathered troops from both Aegialus and Athens and with them he campaigned against the southern Thessalians, recovering his father's rights and becoming king in Phthiotis.

Ancient History Sourcebook: Thucydides: On The Early History of the Hellenes (written c. 395 BCE)
And I am inclined to think that the very name was not as yet given to the whole country, and in fact did not exist at all before the time of Hellen, the son of Deucalion; the different tribes, of which the Pelasgian was the most widely spread, gave their own names to different districts.
But when Hellen and his sons became powerful in Phthiotis, their aid was invoked by other cities, and those who associated with them gradually began to be called Hellenes, though a long time elapsed before the name was prevalent over the whole country.
Of this, Homer affords the best evidence; for he, although he lived long after the Trojan War, nowhere uses this name collectively, but confines it to the followers of Achilles from Phthiotis, who were the original Hellenes; when speaking of the entire host, he calls them Danäans, or Argives, or Achaeans.
