THE BALLOONATIC (DIE BALLONFAHRER) - Bonner Kinemathek
As their boat slowly slides out of the tunnel, Phyllis is sitting with a stern expression on her face while Buster is in shambles, his clothes ripped, his eyes flened, his hat crumpled on top of his head.
A resourceful adversary, Phyllis at one point escapes from a charging bull by grabbing the beast by its horns and flipping it on its side before Buster has a chance to rescue her.
Phyllis, who has remained aloof throughout Buster's previous - and equally inept - outdoor adventures, now swoons with admiration after having witnesses his hunting exploits from afar.

Chicago (1927 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chicago is a 1927 silent film produced by Cecil B. DeMille and directed by Frank Urson.
It was drawn from a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins which was in turn based on the true story of Beulah Annan, fictionalized as "Roxie Hart" (played by Phyllis Haver), her fellow death-row inmate Belva Gaertner, and their spectacular involvement in the murder of their boyfriends.
The Watkins play was again filmed in 1942 as Roxie Hart, starring Ginger Rogers (in the title role), and Adolphe Menjou as Billy Flynn.

 Battle of the Sexes review
She has a tough time, because her daddy has let his susceptible eye rove in the direction of Phyllis Haver, and what can Belle Bennett and the children mean to a man who has known Phyllis?
D.W. Griffith has made an up-to-date version of one of his early triumphs, "The Battle of the Sexes," and manages to invest it with moments of his genius, though the picture is far from being the master of the close-up at his best.
Phyllis Haver has the vamp role - the same type of role which she portrayed in "The Way of All Flesh," though the characterization isn't half so genuine.

Movie Info for Chicago on MSN Movies
Based on a real-life incident, Maurine Watkins' semi-satirical novel and play Chicago was first brought to the screen in 1927.
Phyllis Haver was ideally cast as gum-chewing dance-hall girl Roxie Hart, who shoots her lover full of holes and then is forgiven by her faithful -- if not entirely honest -- husband Amos (Victor Varconi).
Put on trial for murder, Roxie comes to enjoy the publicity, and soon willingly becomes the darling of the media (it helps that she's convinced herself that no jury in their right mind will condemn a "celebrity").

The Balloonatic (1923)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
This minor offering from Keaton is really just a collection of sketches cobbled together to make a 20 minute short; as such, it lacks any cohesion and struggles to hold the viewer's interest despite containing a number of decent sight gags and Keaton's ever-reliable comic timing.
In this one he finds himself atop a hot air balloon that has drifted from its moorings and which transports him deep into the countryside where he encounters young Phyllis Haver, a rather strapping young wench whose initial coolness towards him thaws after a number of escapades.
There's very little that is memorable here, and probably the best moment is Keaton's reaction when he realises he is standing beneath a chute that dispatches visitors from the 'House of Trouble' fairground ride just after a heavy young lady has entered.

Character actor Jean Hersholt (yes, the same one the Oscars named the Humanitarian Award for) is a frumpy, bespectacled middle class husband and an unassuming Wall Street bigwig wooed by blond floozy Phyllis Haver.
This role is deliciously played by Phyllis Haver and the scene with her and a piano has to be seen to believe.
The DVD is a better buy because the picture is marginally better and you can freeze frame Phyllis Haver while she's standing on top of the piano (an unparalled bit of 20's cheesecake).

This might be Gloria's first film appearence, as the history books say she worked for Mack Sennett just once, then moved on to other studios.
Miss Haver was also under contract with Sennett, but for many years in a row, from 1912-1920, so I'm pretty sure that this was probably a Mack Sennett movie.

So we gave her tangos, fox trots and Charleston pieces that would have been contemporary for the day.
