Topic: Phyllostomidae

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

Family Phyllostomidae or New World leaf-nosed bats
Phyllostomidae is a stunning family from the point of view of trophic adaptations and guilds.
The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus (Phyllostomidae) is considered to be a luciphogous animal that prefers to rest on dark and moist roosts (Taddei 1983).
Although Phyllostomidae is the most diverse bat family in Brazil, with 78 species (Aguiar and Taddei 1995), its predominance may be considered, to some extent, as a bias of the principal collection method used, being mist nets.

On the other hand, it is advantageous for them to have a low wing load because they often double their weight in blood after a large blood meal, and they need to be able to lift themselves off the ground (McClearn pers com).
Also, bats are a very important seed disperser and pollinator, so it is important to understand their flight patterns and feeding behaviors because the bats in an area can have a great effect of the flora in that area.
The Phyllostomidae (leaf-nosed bats) is characterized by a flap of skin extending above the nostrils and horseshoe shaped flab below the nostrils, among the family there is a wide variation in size and morphological adaptations (LaVal and Rodríguez 2002).

Vampire bat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The three species are quite different from each other, and are therefore placed within different genera (no other species are currently classified in any of the three genera concerned).
In older literature, the three genera are placed within a family, Desmodontidae, but this is now regarded as unhelpful, as it hides the similarities the vampire bats have with other members of the American leaf-nosed bat family, Phyllostomidae.
The fact that the three known species of vampire bat all seem more similar to one another than any of them is to any other species suggests that sanguivory (feeding on blood) only evolved once, and that all three species share a common ancestor.

Platyrrhinus, with ten species usually recognized, is one of the most diverse genera in the Neotropical bat family Phyllostomidae.
Five species (Carollia subrufa, Chiroderma villosum, Sturnira erythromos, Uroderma magnirostrum, and Vampyrodes caraccioli) of the family Phyllostomidae were used as outgroup to test the monophyly of the genus Platyrrhinus and resolve intrageneric relationships.

Digimorph - Carollia perspicillata (short-tailed fruit bat)
Carollia perspicillata, Seba’s short-tailed bat, is an echolocating bat native to Central and South America.
It is a member of Phyllostomidae, a group characterized by a spear-shaped noseleaf.
The function of the noseleaf is unknown, but scientists suspect that it plays a role in projection of echolocation calls, which are emitted through the nose in some species (including all phyllostomids).

Mormoopidae was once considered a subfamily within Phyllostomidae, but Smith (1972) raised it to family level.
Available data supports either a sister taxa relationship between Mormoopidae and Phyllostomidae, with Noctilionidae as sister to that clade (Van Valen, 1979; Simmons, 1998; Kirsch et al., In press), or Mormoopidae and Noctilionidae as sister taxa, with Phyllostomidae as sister to them (Simmons and Geisler, 1998).

The function of noseleaves is believed to be in focusing echolocation calls as they are emitted (these bats call through their noses).
Other facial structures, such as the swellings often seen on the snout of vespertilionids or the bumps and lappets of the face of Centurio (Phyllostomidae), may be glandular, but this is usually not known for certain.
