Physics First - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Physics First is an educational program that teaches a basic physics course in the ninth grade (usually 15-year-olds), rather than the biology course which is more standard in public schools.
Proponents of Physics First argue that turning this order around lays the foundations for better understanding of chemistry, which in turn will lead to more comprehension of biology.
Montgomery Blair High School's Magnet program, one of the country's premier Math/Science schools, has been teaching physics as the first science in high school since its founding in 1985.

The national reform movements, inclusive in Project 2061 and Standards, and documents such as Nation at Risk (1983), that responded to low science scores and an ever growing gap between science/technology and society, have all been the backbone of Leon Lederman's ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education) educational reform.

The national movement is called “Physics First,” and high school physics teachers from around the country will be talking about their experiences with the program at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Meeting in Philadelphia January 19-23.
Physics Nobel Laureate Leon Lederman supports teaching physics before chemistry and biology, and says the purpose of the national movement is to help create a science literate population.
Some of the challenges of Physics First include convincing physics teachers, who are used to teaching highly motivates seniors, to teach a more conceptual physics class to younger students.

A growing number of schools have changed or are considering changing to a "physics first" approach by which physics becomes the first science subject in secondary schools.
This approachchampioned by Leon Lederman, a Nobel Laureate in physics, and promoted by Project ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education)is garnering attention among professional teachers and education reformers, and some school districts, including a district in San Diego, CA, are changing the sequence of their science curricula to teach physics first.
Physics and chemistry became electives and, unlike other subjects in high school, individual sciences came to be taught as discrete one-year survey courses.

The conference was connected with a national movement to encourage public and private high schools to make the transition from the traditional sequence of teaching science (biology first, then chemistry and physics) to one that offers physics in the ninth grade, followed by chemistry and biology in grades 10 and 11.
The Physics First movement also is part of an effort to fulfill two larger goals of the National Science Foundation (NSF): promoting a science-literate citizenry and encouraging more students to enter professions requiring science, engineering and mathematics.
Additionally, Physics First supporters note that the traditional high school science sequence was instituted at the end of the 19th century in order to teach biology, the more descriptive science, first and physics, the more mathematical and abstract science, later.

The present sequence -- biology first, chemistry second, physics third -- is being judged as ineffective and illogical, and many education reform seekers think that teaching physics to ninth-graders could be the answer to improving student performance on national science assessments and to recruiting more women and minorities for science-track careers.
Physics, which often deals with the interaction of only one or two objects at a time, is in many senses the simplest and most fundamental of the sciences.
Teaching physics first would give the high school science curriculum the coherence it lacks and allow students to build upon concepts they learned in previous years.

Physics for First-Graders recounts the author's experience as one of a group of 20 engineering students from a major university who volunteered to teach science in local elementary schools.
One of the first things he did with his first-graders was to bring them out to a playground and have them hang from the "monkey bars," with and without backpacks full of books.
Reading Physics for First-Graders, like watching the Weird Scientist, was disturbing in a familiar way, similar to what I'm sure I would have felt watching the author, in the episode he remembered from his childhood, plugging a speaker into a wall outlet.

 Physics First
The Executive Board of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) recognizes that teaching physics to students early in their high school education is an important and useful way to bring physics to a significantly larger number of students than has been customary.
This approach — which we call “Physics First” — has the potential to advance more substantially the AAPT’s goal of Physics for All, as well as to lay the foundation for more advanced high school courses in chemistry, biology or physics.
Because in any given school sufficient teachers for mounting a Physics First program are likely to be obtained only by recruiting teachers from other science disciplines, it is urgent to provide these “crossover” teachers training and support for the teaching of physics in general and the teaching of Physics First in particular.
