Topic: Physiography

Physiography of British Columbia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
At 842,677 km2, it stretches from 48 degrees north latitude, to 60 degrees north latitude, and rises from sea level to 4663M at the peak of Fairweather Mountain.
The general "look" of the land, or physiography, includes the majesty of the Rocky Mountains and the subtle rolling prairie of the Peace River district.
Geological structures range from lava flows only a few hundred years old on the land between the Skeena and Nass Rivers) to sedimentary fossil beds - the Burgess Shales near Field, B. - that are a World Heritage Site.

 ACF-NAWQA: Area Description (Physiography)
Similar to much of the Southeast, the basin's physiography reflects a geologic history of mountain building in the Appalachian Mountains, and long periods of repeated land submergence in the Coastal Plain Province.
Physiography within the major provinces is not homogeneous and has been subdivided by the States of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia into the districts shown on the Physiographic Province Map.
Although similar physiography may extend across state boundaries, districts may be assigned different names by state geologists in each state.

 Physiography (1881)
Nearly nine years ago, I was invited, by the Managers of the London Institution, to take part in a series of courses of Educational Lectures; which were intended to initiate young people in the elements of Physical Science.
And the attempt to convey scientific conceptions, without the appeal to observation, which can alone give such conceptions firmness and reality, appears to me to be in direct antagonism to the fundamental principles of scientific education.
"Physiography" has very little to do with this sort of "Physical Geography." My hearers were not troubled with much about latitudes and longitudes; the heights of mountains, depths of seas; or the geographical distribution of kangaroos and Compositæ.

For more comprehensive treatments of Virginia geology, physiography, and climate readers are referred to Woodward and Hoffman (1991) and the Geology of Virginia website at the College of William and Mary (http://www.wm.edu/geology/virginia/).
This province is usually divided into two distinctive subregions based on physiography and elevation.
From Roanoke Gap northward, the northern Blue Ridge consists of a narrow, irregularly weathered series of peaks underlain by a core of resistant granites and metabasalts (greenstone), with resistant metasedimentary rocks exposed on the western flank.

Cascadia - Physiography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Where and how these people live, work, and play are influenced by the shape, or physiography, of Cascadia.
This physiography represents millions of years of volcanism, erosion, deposition, and deformation -- a history that also determines the distribution of groundwater, gold mines, gas wells, and gravel pits, as well as hazards from earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods.
It was prepared, using computer techniques, from numerical representations of topography and bathymetry obtained from traditional surveying methods.

 Physiography and Classification
Vuntut National Park and the Old Crow Flats Special Management Area are located at the northern end of the Cordilleran Orogen geological region (orogen refers to mountain building, cordillera is a Spanish word meaning a series of mountain ridges).
Local physiographic units (physiography is the science of mapping and description of natural features) consisting of one or more of these landscape elements are grouped into three major systems that extend the length of British Columbia and the Yukon: the Western System, Interior System, and Eastern System (Clague 1989).
The Western System includes the great mountain ranges of southwestern Yukon and western B.C., coastal lowlands, valleys and fiords between the mountains, and the continental seafloor of B.C. The Interior System is dominated by the large plateaus of interior B.C. and Yukon, and the bordering mountain ranges.

USGS Upper Illinois River Basin NAWQA Stratification
Surface-water stratification into subunits for the UIRB was based primarily on physiography and was further subdivided based on surficial geology and associated soil permeability, and land use/land cover and associated population density.
Selected thematic maps included physiography, texture of surficial deposits, State Soil Geographic Data Base (STATSGO) soils, land use/land cover updated with 1990 Census data, bedrock geology, depth to bedrock, and ecoregions.
The WMIC did not use physiography at any level of stratification, however, the bedrock geology layer used at Level 1, closely matches the physiographic divides in the study unit and separates the Laurentian Upland Divison - Superior Upland Province from the Interior Plains Division - Central Lowland Province.

Cuyahoga Valley: Physiography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Physiography, also called geomorphology, is the study of land surface features.
Understanding the landform patterns of our area provides information for making decisions that are environmentally intelligent and strategic and can assist in targeting locations for development and for open space preservation and restoration.
Features that form the physiography of the Valley and its surroundings and which are delineated on the Physiography Map include:

Physiography of Tennessee -- Tennessee Archaeology Net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The most uniform area of the Plateau includes all formations of Pennsylvanian age that are bounded by the escarpment of Walden's Ridge and Cumberland Mountains on the east, by the Tennessee River on the south, by the Cumberland River on the north, and by the continuous escarpment along the western edge of the caprock.
These boundaries delineate an upland area of approximately 13,000 square kilometers, which is relatively uniform with respect to salient characteristics of physiography, geology, hydrology, and the biotic and edaphic factors typical of the submaturely dissected Cumberland Plateau.
In this manner a relatively homogenous study unit is defined in which the influence of environmental attributes may be expected to have a direct and observable influence on the structure of human adaptive systems (Ferguson and Pace 1981:2).
