Physical therapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Physiotherapists' scope of practice varies considerably across the world, both in terms of the degree of professional autonomy enjoyed and the range of conditions managed.
Physiotherapists in some jurisdications, such as the Australian states, enjoy professional autonomy, with the ability to act as primary care providers and to determine — and be responsible for — a patient's management plan.
Physiotherapists are pioneering new management techniques for non-organic respiratory problems like hyperventilation and other stress-related disorders as well as leading the development of cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation and non-invasive ventilation.

This qualitative study explored physiotherapists' pain beliefs with the purpose of highlighting the nature of their beliefs and the role they played within their management of chronic low back pain.
A qualitative exploration of physiotherapists' pain beliefs within the context of a clinical situation was carried out using semistructured interviews and observations at designated stages throughout therapeutic encounters with their patients.
A tentative theory was developed which proposed that the physiotherapists' biomedically oriented pain beliefs influenced their clinical reasoning processes including the explanations given to the patients.

Physiotherapists have the professional skills to conduct a thorough assessment of individuals using detailed history-taking and specific tests and measures for screening and monitoring.
The specific intervention plan is based on the diagnosis and the client's goals and may involve various methods of mobilization and manipulation therapy, as well as the use of such modalities as heat or cold, water packs, exercise rehabilitation and electrotherapy, all in conjunction with client education.
Physiotherapists are well aware of the risks associated with manipulation, and take every precaution to screen out patients who may be at risk.

On the other side of the debate, physiotherapists claim that their training is equivalent to a specialised medical degree, and that they are capable of monitoring their own activities and initiating a therapy programme without the explicit direction of a medical doctor.
Although physiotherapists have their own faculty and syndicate, doctors say they are only trained to be medical assistant and are incapable of making decisions on their own.
Even though the Ministry of Health and the Doctors Syndicate insist that physiotherapists should always be supervised by a medical doctor, this actually goes against a law (No. 159) passed in 1987 that says physiotherapists have the right to maintain separate physiotherapy departments at the offices of the Ministry of Health and in teaching hospitals.
