  The National Phytotron
While direct observation of ecosystem responses in manipulative field experiments is an important approach to the study of global environmental change, the sheer number of environmental variables that simultaneously affect ecosystems poses serious constraints.
To adequately test null hypotheses - and to successfully tease out a signal (effect) against a background of noise (random variation) - it is necessary to have adequate replication and control, something that is often impossible to do in nature.
The National Phytotron plays a key role in experimental research on global change by providing researchers with tools to aid in disentangling the complexities of natural ecosystems.

 Research Users & Phytotron Staff
The Phytotronís goal is to stimulate interdisciplinary research on both basic and applied problems in plant biology.
Researchers from within McGillís Biology Department form a stable core of "Internal" Phytotron users and are currently involved in the fields of ecology, evolution, molecular biology, developmental genetics, plant and cell biology.
The Phytotron is administered through the Biology department and operated jointly by a management team consisting of Phytotron staff, Scientific director (Dr. Dan Schoen) and Departmental Administrative Officer (Kathryn Peterson).

Of bogs, mosses, and spruce trees: Early results from the Frost Phytotron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Hikers in the Colorado foothills are unlikely to run across a peat bog--that is, unless they venture into the Frost Phytotron at NCAR's Mesa Laboratory.
Here, for two years, a team of ecologists has been studying the effects of changes in the atmosphere on ten tiny peat bogs and a group of potted oak, spruce, and pine trees.
The phytotron, funded by a grant from the Frost Foundation of Denver, offers a controlled environment in which to study how changes in the composition of the atmosphere affect the biosphere.

TECHNIQUES OF SCREENING BEANS FOR RESISTANCE TO MEXICAN BEAN BEETLE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
An effort was made to develop a fast method of screening beans to Mexican bean beetle under phytotron and field conditions, and to determine if there were any feeding differences between the greenhouse reared and field insect populations.
However, the feeding damage after two hours was significant enough to provide an adequate resistance rating both under phytotron and field conditions, and had a strong correlation with feeding at 24 hours.
Phytotron and Field Conditions: The feeding damage was significantly higher under phytotron as compared with field conditions.

Carbon gain and water use in pinyon pine-juniper woodlands of northern New Mexico: field versus phytotron chamber ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
There were significant differences in instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) measured in the field and the phytotron chamber, although relative rankings of the species and their responses to Ψ were similar.
In the field experiments, WUE of N-fertilized plants was marginally greater in pinyon pine than juniper during the wet season, and in both the field and phytotron chamber experiments instantaneous values of WUE were greater in juniper during dry seasons or during drying cycles.
Field data showed significant interactions between N and WUE, as well as between Ψ and the degree of response to N, however, there were insufficient data to derive predictive equations because of the limited range of environmental conditions encountered in the field.

 AAS-Interview with Lloyd Evans
You can vary the important climatic components that influence their growth and their development – light intensity, the spectral quality of light, the temperature (which is usually independently day temperature and night temperature, at which different things go on in the plants), the CO level, wind speed and all those other things.
The phytotron had 15 glasshouses, all under natural light extended to a day-length of 16 hours but set at a wide range of day and night temperatures.
As well as advising IRRI on the phytotron, I was in a team which did a five-yearly review of them, I represented them on TAC, the technical advisory committee for the whole group of centres, and then I was on their board of governors.
