MEPC - The McPhail Chair Report
Piaffe has an obvious hovering action of the limbs and, in horses that move through their backs, it shows oscillations of the trunk, but piaffe does not have a suspension.
Piaffe sequence showing the stepping from one diagonal pair to the other (3 left pictures) and the moment in which the limbs are suspended at the highest position during the swing phase (right).
This is one of the differences between piaffe and the other diagonal gaits (trot and passage) and is one of the reasons why piaffe should, perhaps, be regarded as a separate gait.

 PIAFFER and PASSAGE:
Piaffe, passage, piaffe-passage and passage-piaffe transitions are the corner stone of academic equitation and are therefore extremely difficult to perfect, though piaffe and passage are quite easy to teach to a passable degree.
In this system, the piaffe is taught as a passage on the spot, conserving the tempo, the suspension and the horizontal balance of the passage and not as a sitting movement that is used to prepare for the levade.
The picures of his horses in piaffe, passage, Spanish trot are exceptional for the brilliance of the movement, the perfection of the rider’s seat, the lightness of the contact, all of it due to a maximum, progressive elevation of the neck.

He is leg moving in piaffe, the same way a horse might fling his legs without using his back in the extended trot.
His poll is the highest point of his neck, and he is slightly in front of the bit, not necessarily a flaw in piaffe, and certainly better than being behind the vertical.
Although he is more comfortable with the movement, the bending of the joints and the and the lowering of the hindquarters, the increased demands of collection, show up in the slight tail swish of his tail.

 Stupid question - Chronicle Forums
I always thought piaffe was "trot in place." So when I saw so many horses inching forward I wondered if that would affect their score.
The piaffe must always be animated by a lively impulsion and characterized by perfect balance.
And then the piaffe can be from the weight of the reins and the erect posture of the rider, and the transitions are into a less hurried test passage.

 Gained Gaits
Piaffe, this gait - movement is often called by the general public, even though incorrectly – the trot in place or on the spot.
Passage, this is kind of “held up trot” in very high collection, in which the diagonal legs interchange in a longer intervals than in the trot (about one second) in a certain "inter-lapping" period during the lift between the pushing-off and the landing.
The execution of this figure is done from the piaffe and the completion is when the horse touches the ground again with his front legs and begins immediately the piaffe again.

While it is apparent that Metternich is moving forward during the piaffe, this is desirable -- the horse is to give the impression of remaining on the spot, and should proceed slightly forward during the piaffe.

It is not uncommon for a horse just learning piaffe from piaffe advancing to have one hind leg advance slightly farther than the other when asked for piaffe on the spot.
Performing piaffe with a bend to that side is often helpful in regulating the position of the hind legs while maintaining relative elevation ("up through the withers').

The Piaffe is a diagonalized, elevated, rounded, suspended and majestic trot, in which the horse jumps from one diagonal to the other.
Generally, the beginner’s Piaffe is shy or too fast, the amount of flexing of the joints is still insufficient and the positioning of the head is sometimes low.
Ask a couple of Piaffe steps while backing up half a foot, then some strides on the spot, than forward… then backwards… on the spot again… your horse is engaging his hindquarter under his mass and the hind legs become more animated when staying on the spot or going forward.

People think in piaffe it is very important that the horse stays on the spot – no, no, no, no! It is not important that the horse stay on the spot.
If you try to stop the horse going forward in the beginning in the piaffe, he starts to go from side to side with his hind legs or with his front legs, or he has the hind legs too far behind.
To have a horse piaffe on the spot, you must have a horse that is already trained and already knows very very good piaffe.
