  Grieg: Piano Concerto
The rift was soon healed by the birth of a daughter the following April, and in June of 1868 the three Griegs traveled to Denmark.
Nina stayed with her family in Copenhagen while Edvard retired to the country to compose, and by the end of the summer he had finished the solo part of his piano concerto and had outlined the orchestration.
Grieg was unable to attend due to his commitments with the Oslo orchestra, but the soloist, Edmund Neupert, wrote that ``the three dangerous critics...applauded with all their might,'' and Grieg's friend Benjamin Fedderson informed him that there were ``thunderous chorus[es] of applause'' at numerous instances throughout the work.

  Piano Concerto (Grieg)
The work is among Grieg's earliest important works, being written in 1868 in Sollerod[?] in Denmark, during one of Grieg's visits there to benefit from the warmer climate than that of his native Norway.
Grieg's concerto is often compared to the Piano Concerto of Robert Schumann - it is in the same key, the opening descending flourish on the piano is similar, and the overall style is considered to be closer to Schumann than any other single composer.
Grieg had heard Schumann's concerto played by Clara Schumann in Leipzig in 1858, and was greatly influenced by Schumann's style generally, having been taught the piano by Schumann's friend, E. Wenzel.

Edvard Grieg: Piano Concerto In A minor   (Site not responding. Last check: )
One of the Romantic movement's most frequently performed concertos, it is the work of Grieg's youth (1868), strongly characterised by a sprightly rhythmic, melodic and harmonic imagination.
Grieg's model was undoubtedly Schumann's piano concerto, a work which had made an "unforgettable impression" on him the first time he heard it, played by Clara Schumann, in Leipzig in 1858.
The concerto opens with a sparkling piano section, based on a motif which is often described as the "Grieg motif' (a descending minor second followed by a major third).

Piano Concerto in A minor by Grieg
From the very first it has been regarded as Grieg’s finest large-scale accomplishment (he generally found the small keyboard miniature to be more congenial to his temperament) and as the fullest musical embodiment of Norwegian nationalism in romantic music.
Though the concerto was popular from the start, and was published in full score only three years after its composition, Grieg himself was never entirely satisfied with it, and he continued to touch up details of both the orchestral and solo parts for the rest of his life.
One Norwegian analyst has pointed out that the opening splash of piano, built of a sequence consisting of a descending second followed by a descending third, is a very characteristic Norwegian melodic gesture, and that this opening typifies the pervasiveness of the folk influence.

 Stenhammer, Piano Concerto No. 1
Now, though the Concerto can be heard on three different recordings, it is in a sense almost as new to concert-goers as it was a hundred years ago.
The Concerto leaves no doubt about Stenhammar's ambition: it is as long as the Brahms Second Piano Concerto (then just thirteen years old) and in the same four-movement form.
The piano answers with a cadenza of double octaves, and the Concerto is underway with a dialogue between these two elements -orchestra and piano - instead of the traditional orchestral ritornello.

 DeGreef Grieg Concerto
Grieg totally endorsed De Greef's performance of his music ("De Greef is the best interpreter of my music I have met with"), although later he also endorsed Percy Grainger in the same fashion -- and the two pianists' performance styles differed significantly as can be heard from the latter's live recordings.
De Greef recorded an acoustic abbreviated version of Grieg's concerto in 1921 for Victor and made the first complete recording of the concerto for the same label January 18, 1927 in the early days of electric recording, heard on this new CD.
In contrast, Benno Moiseiwitsch's November 1953 recording of the Grieg, coupled with Schumann's Concerto, is a model of refinement and controlled virtuosity, although surprisingly with a few minor slips in both works.

 Troldhaugen
The Piano Concerto in A Minor received its Norwegian debut on 7 August; again, Neupert was the soloist while Johan Hennum conducted the Christiania Theatre Orchestra.
In the years to come, audiences throughout Europe heard the concerto; the first German performance was in 1872, the English one in 1874, and soon the concerto was played in Stockholm, Brussels, Munich, Vienna, Warsaw and Prague.
Grieg was taken aback when Liszt insisted on playing all the piano parts directly from the score.

Although I own the Lupu CD of these kindred souls of piano concertos (and found them perfectly balanced), I soon found that this Andsnes version runs rings around all the other versions I have heard so far.
The Grieg concerto starts out with a punchy first movement, energetic and poetic, as if Andsnes and Jansons are setting sparks off at each other.
The slow movement is meditative but it never drags the concerto, and Andsnes, true to his Norweigan roots, really relishes the dance-like finale.

Dismissed by Debussy as “chocolate-covered snow,” Grieg’s music continues to hold sway in the public’s heart, primarily because of his Piano Concerto in A minor and the incidental music to Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.
Grieg had a fine melodic sense and a conservative but appealing harmonic style.
Though Scandinavian artists in general are often characterized in terms of a melancholy and moodiness attributable to the northern clime (Ibsen in drama, Ingmar Bergman in film, Sibelius and Nielsen in symphonic music), Grieg’s music functions generally on a level of user-friendly lyricism.

In his program notes for this album, Brendan Beales comes close to expressing the stature of this concerto in words: "Its staggering success as perhaps the quintessentially romantic piano concerto may perhaps be attributed to its warm lyricism, its sense of drama, and its highly effective and technical(ly) challenging piano part."
Grieg's Piano Concerto is one of the most frequently recorded, do doubt because it is unexcelled in its popularity, and for its depth of Romanticism and technical splendor.

Nor has the frequently voiced criticism that Grieg took Schumann's piano concerto as a basis for his form (especially in the first movement) affected its popularity in the slightest.
In spite of the variety of influences which found their way into the work, it would be wrong to accuse Grieg of eclecticism: whatever criticisms may be made, there is no denying that the concerto displays an individual profile.”
