Piano Concerto (Grieg) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grieg's concerto is often compared to the Piano Concerto of Robert Schumann — it is in the same key, the opening descending flourish on the piano is similar, and the overall style is considered to be closer to Schumann than any other single composer.
Grieg had heard Schumann's concerto played by Clara Schumann in Leipzig in 1858, and was greatly influenced by Schumann's style generally, having been taught the piano by Schumann's friend, Ernst Ferdinand Wenzel.
In the last movement of the concerto, similarities to the halling (a Norwegian folk dance) and imitations of the Hardanger fiddle (the Norwegian folk fiddle) have been detected.

 Mozart CD: Piano Concerto
On this new release she gives delectable and stylish performances of Mozart’s delightful Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 6 (recorded in 1969 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, directed by Martin Turnovsky) and Robert Schumann’s brilliant Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (recorded in 1982 with the Orchestre National de France conducted by Eugen Jochum).
The Cello Concerto was completed in July 1997, a year before his death at the age of 85, and is in the same spirit and tradition as the famous Elgar Concerto.
The Northern Sinfonia is conducted by Alvaro Cassuto and the soloists are Bradley Creswick (violin), Alexander Somov (cello) and Sue Blair (harp).

 Concert Premiere Review
Being a piano concerto written for Emanuel Ax, Rouse used the opportunity to double the theme of musical/artistic insanity by also linking the work to Robert Schumann, the great Romantic composer and pianist who was also institutionalized for psychosis.
Schumann is quoted occasionally, and a new thematic idea is developed, where the piano wanders into beautiful melodies only to lose them to chaos.
Later in the concerto this dialectic accelerates and grows more harsh in tone; the moments of beauty are shorter and more poignant as they are immediately seized upon and brutalized by a burst of implacable dissonance.

 The Symphony - Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau, Saxony, in 1810, son of a bookseller, publisher, and writer.
Schumann made his first attempts at symphonic writing in 1829, with two movements of a symphony in G minor, which was to remain unfinished.
Schumann is perhaps the personification of Romantic ideals.

Schumann piano concerto Rosel/Masur[DS]: Classical CD Reviews- May 2003 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
More often than not, recordings of Schumann’s famous A minor Piano Concerto are coupled with a major Schumann solo work or another famous concerto such as the Grieg Piano Concerto, also in the key of A minor.
Thus, the A minor Concerto is essentially monothematic and has raised some complaints from listeners that Schumann’s wealth of creativity in the Concerto is rather low and that the composition is too long.
Although Schumann’s later two works for piano and orchestra do not scale the heights of the A minor, they are worthy of a fine interpretation.

Edvard Grieg: Piano concerto in A minor, op.
Grieg's model was undoubtedly Schumann's piano concerto, a work which had made an "unforgettable impression" on him the first time he heard it, played by Clara Schumann, in Leipzig in 1858.
The concerto opens with a sparkling piano section, based on a motif which is often described as the "Grieg motif' (a descending minor second followed by a major third).

Schumann Piano Concerto, Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1
In 1860, perhaps feeling isolated since Schumann's death, Brahms and Joachim publicly declared their objections to the policies of Brendel's Neue Zeitschrift Musik, especially its assumption that all worthy contemporary composers were in sympathy with the aims of the music the journal championed.
While the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra in Schumann's Piano Concerto is gracious and poetic, the dialogue in Brahms' is combative and impassioned.
The piano's lyrical opening theme soothes the orchestra's palpable sense of catastrophe; the warmth and serenity of the piano's majestic, flowing second theme is juxtaposed against the tragic, pathetic character of the orchestra.

Her customary virtuosity is everywhere in evidence, and, in a way, she turns the piano into the spinal column of the work, with the violin and cello playing around her.
In the Schumann A minor concerto Argerich is wonderful the solo passages and a fine partner in orchestrated ones and she really makes much of both the lyrical runs and the dance-like passages in the last movement.

The Schumann suits Uchida down to the ground, because it allows her to employ both her innate emotional intelligence and her strong, vigorous technique.
Certainly, one could never doubt the energy she threw at the piano - even before starting, she discarded the outer layer of her apparel, leaving her arms free to attack the keyboard.
Throughout, one had the sensation of spontaneity: as the cello part took over from the piano in the second movement, there was a special bond of trust between the performers that generated a magical dialogue in music.

While it is about Schumann and is mostly orchestral (even if some of the orchestral works are piano pieces arranged byTchaikovsky and Ravel), and is led by the dynamic conductor Riccardo Chailly, the central figure in the concert is, let's face it, Martha Argerich.
But she could be quite fallible in her tendency to rush things, blurring or slighting secondary lines or inner voices, or in her tendency to sometimes dilute the brawnier elements in a score or to produce a less imposing sound in general.
The Schumann Fourth Symphony (which was actually the composer's second symphony) gets a fine reading from the insightful Chailly, who has recently left the highly-coveted position of music director of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to take over the somewhat less prestigious post in Leipzig.

Richter competes with his own classic DG recording of the Schuman concerto with Rowicki from 1959, but since he was probably the greatest Schumann pianist of the century, there's no reason to compare the two, only to apreciate both.
Pianist Sviatoslav Richter was one of the world's greatest interpreters of Schumann, and his 1958 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Piano Concerto with Witold Rowicki and the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra (currently available on CD in the "DG Originals" series) is most people's first choice recommendation, mine included.

In what must pass for a tribute to Dionysiac bravura at the keyboard, we have three towering performances by the late Claudio Arrau (1903-1991), the Chilean virtuoso who had imbibed a thoroughly German-Latin sensibility.
The immediate rarity is the 5 September 1943 Liszt A Major Concerto with a fervent Dimitri Mitropoulos, a searing collaboration from two adherents of the composer: Arrau via Martin Krause, and Mitropoulos via Busoni.
Arrau’s capacity for ever more applications of brilliant filigree are what made his 18 March 1951 interpretation of the Schumann Concerto special to me both as an LP and in its first CD incarnation through Nuova Era’s Vittorio de Sabata Edition.
