Rosas - De Keersmaeker Richard Alston Dance Company Akram Khan Review from Ballet.co
Phase is a Reich at his most minimalist, hypnotic and repetitive phrases on a single instrument repeated over and over with slight and subtle shifts and variations.
In Piano Phase, the two dancers (De Keersmaeker and Tale Dolven in costumes which quite subtly do not quite match) are illuminated by lights which create three shadow dancers behind then, one of each and one which is a composite.
In violin Phase, De Keersmaeker slowly escaped the strictures of some of the movement palette of the earlier section.

 Carnegie Hall - Steve Reich @ 70
The original Piano Phase for two pianos was composed in 1967.
The video portion of this piece was created by David Cossin in 2000 and utilizes a pre-recorded video of him playing the piece on midi percussion pads that then trigger piano samples of the notes of the piece.
Against this pre-recorded video, projected on a screen in front of him, he then plays the moving part that gradually moves ahead, or out of phase with the recorded part.

Gradually, they move out of phase with each other - initially by, say, a quarter note - and secondary rhythms are generated by the way in which the off-parallel rhythms intermesh.
As the synthesiser moved ahead of the piano a substratum of elusive sub-melodies and secondary rhythms was generated - a psychoacoustic impression which was both mesmerising and mildly disquieting, rather like the after-images which appear on the surface of abstract paintings which deploy the overlapping of strong colours.
If the tones were slightly out of phase, a repeating rippling broken chord would be heard, and if moved further out of phase, a repeating melodic pattern would result.

 Piano Phase - Steve Reich
Steve Reich's "Piano Phase" piece requires two parts to run a different tempi.
This is achieved in this example by reducing the note lengths of one part slightly to simulate the difference in tempo.
As the 3 beat phrase is repeated over and over the slight tempo difference results in a 'phasing' offset between the parts.

Steve Reich : Phase Patterns/Pendulum Music/Piano Phase/Four Organs - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
By the '90s, a number of record labels began to re-investigate some of the earlier, pre-fame works of minimalist composers, both established figures (such as Reich, Glass, and Riley), as well as those who were less well-known.
Phase Patterns and Four Organs had been issued on an obscure Shandar LP, and the latter had also been available on a Columbia recording paired with some John Cage pieces for prepared piano.
Piano Phase, for two pianos, uses a similar methodology but comes to quite different ends due to the acoustic nature of the instrument.
